I love gyros and other Mediterranean food, but this place does not come up to a decent standard. If there were any cucumbers in the Tzatziki sauce they were just passed over the mixing bowl. The gyros meat had very little lamb in it and was dry, not just over-cooked, but dried out from being exposed to the air too long. The Hispanic man behind the counter was the only one in the restaurant who was friendly and gracious. The others made you feel as if they were doing you a favor by taking your money and providing you with sub-standard food. The food was edible if not tasty.

You know something of note is going on when a second Mediteranean takeout place (Gyro King) has the cajones to open just a few doors down from another similar restaurant (Sunshine). But just look at the lines - Gyro King has a line out the door (everyone is happy to wait for quality), and the place down the block - with their bad attitude service and so-so food - no one is in line because they all defected to Gyro King. The guy at the register at Gyro always has a smile, and is happy to explain everything on the menu. I order special (no dairy), and they have gotten it right every time. The food, especially the salads, is super fresh and yummy. Big portions, very authentic. Highly recommend (and I am picky). Chicken gyro platter is my favorite.

My wife and I eat at Gyro King about every ten days or so. Located at the BART Civic Center exit, it is incredibly convenient for our frequent trips to Davies Symphony Hall, the Herbst and the rest of that area. However, it's the food that keeps us returning so frequently. The lamb is well marinated, tasty and tender. The tabuli is as good as we find anywhere. The Greek salad is wonderful. The tzatziki (cacik) is great. They bake their own delicious bread. The service is always friendly and the price is certainly right (usually $25 for the two of us). You really can't miss here.
