St Mary's Cathedral will take your breath away - it is a daring departure from the traditional Catholic church. First, it is huge - it seats 2400 people. It was dedicated in 1971. Yea, Vatican Council.
Called a "spiritual oasis" - the interior rises 19 stories high! Faceted glass windows representing the Four Basic Elements form a cross at the apex... My very favorite piece is the stunningly beautiful Baldachino - flickering in the light and wind over the huge marble altar..which weighs a ton! (Both the altar and the Baldachino weigh a ton) Yes, we met a darling docent who gave us a mini tour. Free Parking. Donations welcomed.

I'm from Quebec where there a lot of churches; however, none can match the stark élan and minimalist beauty of St. Mary's Cathedral. We were lucky to be greeted by a volunteer docent who explained to us many of the symbols that make up the cathedral's interior. The highlight, of course, is the complex arched ceiling's glass panes. Daring and bold!

Went to Sunday mass. Choir great. Baldichinum dazzling as all the metal rods glisten. Colored glass nice. Congregation friendly and included every race and nationality one can imagine. Just like real church everyone is here.

This place was a huge disappointment for me. I love to visit churches and get an inspirational feeling, but there was absolutely none here. We saw the concrete and the tiny gift shop, but what else is there to see? The design of the place even spoiled the view which otherwise one might have had . . . why build the roofs of the buildings below just so that they spoil the view from the church?

We were just taking a walk and decided to go in and see this beautiful building. It's like no church we've ever seen before. This is a must-see in San Francisco and I'm so glad we just happened to walk by it. The inside is so beautiful!
