Mary Poppins was playing the weekend we visited and the show was delightful - the actors all had Broadway experience and the orchestra was live. The theater is gorgeous, seating is comfortable, and acoustics are good.
We made the mistake of walking from our hotel in Union Square area to the theater. It's longer than it looks on the map and the neighborhood gets pretty seedy quickly. The theater has two security guards out front so you can feel comfortable arriving early, going outside during intermission, or hailing a cab after the performance.
Cab fare there is quite inexpensive ($10) but you will be competing with everyone else for a cab ride back.
