For anyone living on the west coast it seemed stale and in need of a makeover. Too commercial and lacks the authenticity of chinatown. The best part was the huge Daiso.

After seeing Japantown mentioned in the LA Times, we made a visit. It is a lot quieter than Chinatown. The best stops are Daiso, for shopping (a bit like a Dollar tree), Benkyodo, and especially Paper Tree. Benkyodo has fresh handmade mochi, and the flavors we tried were all very good (bring cash). Paper Tree is a family-owned origami, paper craft, and stationery store. There are some amazing creations on display in there. They also participate in local events like the cherry blossom festival in April, where they teach a bit of paper-folding.

It's small and increasingly less fun, but there are a few neighborhood gems in food. Go for the special events - that;s when this place really shines.

We really like Japantown. In general I'd say it's a Very Good place to visit in SF that a lot of folks don't know about. They usually go to Chinatown, which is a lot "denser," full of tourists, and not as clean. I like Japantown because there's everything from sushi in little "boats" to art to a hardware store that only sells special Japanese hardware...there's also a Hawaiian food place if you're hankering for loco moco! ;-)
