One of my favourite places visited in San Francisco. A very interesting building and some fabulous paintings, sculptures and porcelain along with special changing exhibitions depending on when you visit.

We took the 40 minute bus ride from 4th Street in the city for $2, returning the same way some 2-1/2 hours later. This fine arts museum in Lincoln Park also had a large cafe which was very handy for lunch.

The view from the front of the building was also wonderful.

We went mainly to see the special Pissarro exhibition although the overall space has some interesting, "classical" details, displays and decor, with a strong French flavour.

The Pissarro show was very enjoyable and provided a good overview of Pissarro's works (which are some of the most interesting of the impressionist era) as well as giving considerable background to his political and social beliefs and activism. He was also famous as a mentor to other painters like Cezanne and Renoir as well as being a very successful painter in a commercial sense.

The setting of the museum is spectacular and offers panoramic views, interesting walks and picnic settings and sits near the Holocaust Memorial which is also worth a visit.

The Legion Of Honor is a must see for museum goers and art lovers. The temporary exhibitions are usually what draw us during our visits, but there also excellent permanent exhibitions, particularly the medieval works. Our most recent trip included a visit to the exhibition of beautiful old Dutch Master works, and an outstanding exhibition titled "The Mourners: Tomb Sculptures from the Court of Burgundy" that was amazing. We had my 77 year old mother with us, who doesn't always "get" the art, but she absolutely loved it.

The Legion is quite a ways out from other sights in SF, but well worth the trip. Located in the heart of a beautiful golf course, on a sunny day it offers a beautiful view, and even on a foggy day (which can be often) it offers a great place to be inside. The cafe offers a nice selection of items - we had coffee and amazing desserts. We'll definitely be back again next time!
