Wow, we were so impressed with the way the chef takes the familiar Mexican elements to the next level - it was such an enjoyable evening. The restaurant is casual but well designed and the prices were very reasonable.

ot always the best destination it arrives at.

After a full morning of visual delight at the De Young Museum, we headed for lunch to the area known as 9th And Irving. It did not take us long to find a place once we cross Lincoln and started walking on 9th: Nopalitos. This stop resulted in a great taste experience that complemented our museum experience.
Great Margaritas complemented our experiencing Esquite Tostado, a delicious starter made with cheese, corn and other wonderful ingredients. We also had Quesadillas con Flor de Calabaza, a Pescado Asado al Pipian Verde.
This is definitely place to revisit in future visits to San Francisco!

Nopalito is simply one of the best Mexican restaurants we have eaten in and that includes anywhere in Mexico. Simple menu with wonderful flavors and presentation. We experienced the lunch menu and one of the best mole sauces I've ever had. Highly, highly recommended in the lovely Inner Sunset area across from Golden Gate Park. Easy to access if you are staying in central San Francisco as well. Take the N Judah train. It's about a 15 minute ride.

Nopalito review
Context: we called ahead around 1pm on a saturday and when we arrived, we were seated fairly quickly, about 30 minutes after our call. The place was very busy and only slowed down after 2pm.
Atmosphere: large outdoor enclosed patio and smaller insides space with one big communal table, bar seating and several two tops. The place is packed and sitting at the bar is kind of like what a Pringles potato chip must feel like stacked in its canister, but let me tell you the coziness is worth the food! If you want more space try to get a table outside. The place has lots of light. The one bathroom is reached by going outside and around the building.
Service: a bit brusque at the door but she was sifting through lots of people and the system is not efficient. People with dogs are trying to get seated outside, big parties need multiple tables, people are calling ahead and others are walking up asking how long, in a very congested space. One can't help but ask, what is the purpose of no reservations except to perpetuate chaos?
Inside, once we were snuggled together, our waitress literally had to come up behind us, get our attention and hand us stuff over our shoulder, but she was friendly, efficient and seemed unphased.
Food: I would put up with a lot, including pringlization, to eat this food. There were so many yummy looking things on the menu and others being cooked in front of us, it was hard to know where to begin. Watching other food led us to pick the chips covered in chili sauce, sprinkled with cheese and white onion (do not even think nachos), the stew with white beans, pork bacon, cilantro, and the thick corn tortilla with pork, chorizo and cabbage on top. It was impossible to chose. The mole enchiladas looked fantastic, as did the posole and this fried quesadilla thing.
First, let me say that everything we had was fantastic, and they all tasted different. What a pleasure to have three such distinct dishes. The chips are crispy with just a big of chew, spicy and they give you a sour cream like thing (crema) to dip them in but it's not necessary. The stew has large, almost firm white beans, chunks of bacon, and a red flavorful sauce. It's served with warm, chewy corn tortillas. And the thick corn tortilla dish was a mix of textures and tastes with a lightly spicy bite.
Drinks: they have beers, margaritas, and a variety of non alcoholic Mexican bevs. We had a hibiscus orange drink that was light, refreshing and just slightly sweet, exactly like a similar drink I had in Mexico. We had the mex beer Indio which is a lighter dark beer.
