“Be aware: Coastal Tour to Caramel with Monteray Aquarium option”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013

We always take the local tours when we go someplace new. However, his coastal tour turned out to be the worst trip we have ever been on. Keep in mind hat we were travelling with an 82 year old diabetic with mobility issues as well. First of all, the bus was an hour late and we had to stand on the sidewalk waiting. When we got on the bus the driver told us that the people with aquarium tickets would not have time for lunch so he told us to buy lunch at the next stop which was at 11:30 am. Noone told us that when we ordered the tour. Anyway, there were no lunch items at the stop. It was just coffee, sweets and pastries which a diabetic cannot have. We had to settle for scones. Then when we got to the aqarium later on, we found that there was a restaraunt in the aqarium but we had already eaten the junk! At around 7pm (7.5 hours later) we stopped for an hour in Caramel. It had been a long time since we had eaten and asked if we should have dinner there. The driver suggested bloody marys instead and said we would be stopping to eat at 8pm. So, we waited. At 8pm he stopped at a fast food area and gave us 15 minutes to get something from a fast food chain and get back on the bus. Man, we should have eaten in Caramel! So, we did not eat the fast food because of the high salt, fat and sugar content of the foods. Then we get close to San Fransisco at 9pm and find out that we are the next to last people to get dropped off at our hotel. We were hoping to get back to take our elderly traveller a decent meal. We did not get back to our hotel until after 10pm and the restaraunt in our hotel closed at 10 pm! Our 11 hour trip turned into a 12 hour trip. We were very tired, cranky, hungry and very disappointed. We had to go to Applebies for dinner at 10:45 pm. Although we saw a lot and learned a lot; just be aware people and ask for details!

Dear smartcook,
Thank you for sharing your feedback on TripAdvisor. We will work with the guide you were assigned to provide more information about the breaks on the tour.

On all our tours, we do our best to provide ample time for guests to have snacks, a meal and/or drinks at each stop - depending on the tour type. We will review our itineraries once more with all our guides so that we can improve service for our future guests.

Thank you very much,
Janet H.

The bus arrived and departed on time. The driver was very descriptive of the towns and areas. We had an excellent time and enjoyed it very much.

“San FRancisco Grand City Tour”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013

Was disappointed we didn't go to Lombard street, had to take pictures from two blocks away. the same with the Painted Ladies Victorian homes.

Driver was ok, but he confused us with his "no talking" rule, then he got annoyed when he asked us questions and no one responded.

And he kept singing throughout the tour. It was cute the first time he did it (he sang the " Rice a Roni" song off key), but by the third hour it became annoying. He also complained about the traffic and the pedestrians a little too much for me.

But we really enjoyed Twin Creeks and Golden Gate bridge. Would have loved to have seen more sights like these. San Francisco is a great city... And the tour buses were very comfortable.

Overall the tour was a B+, the driver a C-.

Most uncomfortable moment; When the driver asked for a gratuity at the end of the trip, so be prepared for this to happen. We don't have a problem tipping well when its worth it, but there was no graceful way to bow out if you didn't enjoy the trip.

“Safe ride - driver needs to brush up - Muir Woods”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013

We had a small bus to take us on a lovely ride out to Muir Woods. Small is good, because the roads leading into Muir Woods are small and curvy.
Our driver used to drive for another company, and he was very safe. But, he needed to brush up on his facts.
Muir Woods was not owned by the Muir family- it was the Kent family who named the site in Mr Muir's honor. You are driven directly to the woods, where you are dropped off for 1.5 hours to tour on your own. An easy walk, with very nice signage. There is a challenging trail you can take that involves hills. Estimated 1.5-2 hr walk, so go fast, because that bus has to leave whether you are back or not.
Stop in Sausalito to drop off passengers who want to explore and ride the ferry back to SF.
You get two rides across the Golden Gate bridge.
Great enthusiasm on part of driver - just more time in tour talk class.
Went with this company because it's a local company.

“A Decent Tour, If We Could've Understood Our Driver”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2013

We decided that a San Francisco Grand City Tour and Alcatraz Tour would be the best way to kick off our San Francisco vacation.

We were promptly picked up by a friendly driver at our hotel. We were then taken to the tour office where we had to get our tickets, then we boarded another bus, which had very comfortable seating. We were really hoping that the driver that picked us up would be the one that did our tour, but that was not the case. We thought that the spots on the tour were excellent, and we enjoyed hopping off at several locations during the tour, though we had really hoped to stop at places like Lombard Street and Haight Street since we couldn't take pictures through the tinted windows that well. I have to be honest, we had an extremely difficult time understanding our driver. He had a thick accent. My husband couldn't understand a word he said, and I had to work extremely hard to understand what he was saying and after three hours of nonstop talk (I know it's a tour, but I'm not sure it's necessary to fill every ounce of space with talking), we were actually a tad annoyed. There were several times that he would talk about places that we really wanted to see, but never actually point them out. It made the tour rather confusing. We were really anxious to get off the bus after 3.5 hours. I'm positive that with a different driver, this would've been a completely different experience. It was exceptionally hard to tip the driver at the end (though we did because he kept reminding us about it) when we knew our experience wasn't what we were hoping for.

The Alcatraz Tour itself was exceptional. It's at your own pace and does offer an audio tour. I'm sure that this tour combo can be an exceptional package given the right experience.
