Owner description: From its vantage point overlooking the spectacular Golden Gate, Fort Point protected San Francisco harbor from Confederate and foreign attack during and after the U.S. Civil War. Its beautifully arched casemates display the art of the master brick mason from the Civil War period.

I last visited this fort twenty years ago when it was virtually abandoned. Now there are pocket exhibitions in the windy rooms: the making of the GG Bridge, black soldiers in the Civil War, etc. It still has an abandoned mysterious feel to it and the wind is no joke. The view of the Golden Gate Bridge is unparalleled and of course once you know that the bridge got its current structure with the arch just to save the fort, the place exudes it importance.

This is a place I usually pass by on my way to photograph the Golden Gate Bridge. Often times its easy to get so consumed with the Golden Gate Bridge that you forget that the little fort under the bridge even exists. On the contrary, the fort was there well before the Golden Gate Bridge connected the San Francisco peninsula to Marin Headlands.

It's awesome to look at pictures of the fort before the Golden Gate was constructed and the pictures of the Golden Gate being built. You can access most parts of the fort and you really do feel like you're in an 1800's time warp when walking through. You can stand at the bottom in the open courtyard, go through the museum which showcases the old officer and enlisted quarters, or go to the top and take spectacular photos.

The park rangers were cool about everything and provided information when needed. This is most definitely a great place to visit. Just remember they close at 5pm! I only say this because I almost got locked in and no one would have known I was there had I not just been walking around in the open.

I enjoyed my time at Fort Point. We went on a weekend and it was not crowded at all. The walk down to Fort Point from the bus stop right before crossing the bridge gave us a lot of beautiful photo opps with the bridge. Not only did we have a lovely view of the bridge, we could also see across the bay, Alcatraz, the pier... it was very scenic.

Fort Point itself was informative and historical. There were a lot of interesting exhibits, photos, real canyons and props that recreated the rooms during the times Fort Point was active. The top of the Fort gave us a unique view of underneath the Golden Gate bridge as well as the busy waterway.

One tip I have is to definitely bring a jacket. It is crazy windy there!

This attraction is free it is interesting and has great views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the Bay Area. It is well worth a visit. One tip take a jacket as it can get very windy on the battlements.
