Owner description: From its vantage point overlooking the spectacular Golden Gate, Fort Point protected San Francisco harbor from Confederate and foreign attack during and after the U.S. Civil War. Its beautifully arched casemates display the art of the master brick mason from the Civil War period.

The Golden Gate Bridge is built right over the fort. Pretty amazing! Just remember there is no public transportation out there, so be prepared for a LONG walk up a steep hill to catch a bus.

Gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the bay. The fort is beautiful and full of history, and it feels like stepping back in time. Parking is free (rare in San Francisco). Though, a warning: the fort is extremely cold, as the frigid winds are funneled into it. Where very warm clothing, as even on a warm day, this place is COLD. Well worth it, but come prepared!

we enjoyed our visit to fort point. its an impressive brick fort from the 1850s. we enjoyed learning the role it played in protecting the bay during the gold rush and civil war. we also enjoyed the view of the underneath of the golden gate bridge. there is a good video about the construction of the bridge that plays in the theater at the fort.

This is another great San Francisco photo shoot site; view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the city.
The fort has a great history and houses various artifacts. The park rangers were friendly and happy to answer any questions we had. While we were there, a group of school children (3rd graders?) were touring and having fun. Both children and adults can appreciate this place.
There was plenty of parking but you have to be mindful of other visitors (on foot, on bicycle, in funky vehicle – motor or otherwise) on the narrow and curvy road on your way down/up to the fort.

The original GG Bridge plans called for demolishing the fort, but the chief engineer redesigned the bridge's arch to save the fort. And we should be glad he did! The view of the bay and back to the City is unbeatable, and you can appreciate just how massive the bridge is by looking up at it. It seems its always cold and windy out here not matter what time of year it is, so you can imagine what it was like for the soldiers garrisoned here. It a great place to get some perspective when you realize this was the wild edge of America not that long ago. The exhibits are informative and thought-provoking, and if you're up to it, a hike back to The City through the Presidio is well worth it!
