“Small but nice”
Reviewed July 15, 2014

We visited here mostly because Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo doesn't have an aquarium anymore. Its a nice place, price is good, parking is rough if you don't arrive early. I think we got there about ten and had one of the last spots before the parking lot was full. There's a lot more to do than just the aquarium, so be sure to see the other attractions in the building and nearby. Golden Gate Park puts on a show all of its own, and people-watching makes for excellent sport!

“Very good aquarium (and the rest of the museum is fine also)”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

This aquarium is inside the California Academy of Sciences, and admission is included in the CAS entrance fee. (If you're taking an entire family, do check current prices at the website so that you don't suffer sticker shock upon arrival.)

This is a fine aquarium, with lots of exhibits on corals, sea horses, jellies, and hordes of other colorful (and drab, but still interesting) ocean denizens. It does suffer from comparison with the Monterey Bay Aquarium "down the road" from it (but what aquarium wouldn't?), but is still very much worth a visit. Some of the individuals have been on display for something like three-quarters of a century. But that I could be in that good a shape when nearing the year 2100!

Spend a day in Golden Gate Park and visit the aquarium and all the other venues. Don't forget to take tea at the Tea Garden.

“free days limited to 4 x a year”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

$25 is pretty steep but if you go on free day and don't mind crowds it's great. There are more free days for SF residents but for out of towners it is now limited to 4x a year. Either way, go early and stay all day. Once inside make a beeline to the ticketed (free but you need a ticket) areas such as the planetarium, special movies/exhibits, etc. You get a timed ticket usually good for several hours later (if you are there early enough) so by the time your ticket time rolls around, you are hopefully still there. Don't miss the rain forest, gotta stand in a long line to see it but well wourth the time.
