As long as you're in shape, this is well worth the hike. I personally enjoy climbing stairs and find this hike much more enjoyable than a stair climber, plus it helps to burn off all the great food at Fisherman's Wharf.

We walked this & found out that you need to be in very good shape!
The Coit Tower (at the top) was well worth the walk: what a great view!
The tower has a 360* view of the city.

Don't do this if you aren't in shape. The hike just up filbert street was enough to wear you out but once you get to the top the views are well worth the effort. We did it at night and the city below us was breathtaking.

There is really no place like these step, in my experience. In a dense urban environment, a few steps up (or down) Telegraph Hill put one in a lush, quiet setting. Trees overhead, flowers everywhere, the screech of parrots, and the notable absence of car noise make this a paradise. You'll envy the residents of the quaint cottages that line the way.

So both my children were born at Children's on California and brought home to the 600 block of Greenwich, just above Pomell St. (if you don't believe me check out the name in the concrete). The older boy had a bit of a problem sometimes falling asleep so I would put him in the front pack and carry him up Greenwich or Union or Filbert itself to sit on the steps and hope he fell asleep. The hard breathing and heart pumping would usually put him to sleep, so then it was on to Geno's for a night cap, Aldino usually had a kind word to say to my boy.

Yes the Filbert steps, many of you are too young to know that the building at Filbert and Montgomery was used for the movie Dark Passage with Humphrey Bogart, nor that much of the plantings were done by a single woman who lived on the steps who's name is escaping me.

One can also see the evil done by mining of the hill for ballast at the end of the steps. That steep drop is not original. But, one can also see one of the nicest penthouses in the city.

If you continue on you can practice your rock hopping along the creek in Levi's plaza although the security guard may not take kindly to this.

A wonderful rare part of the prequake city highly recommended to both locals and tourists. Ignore the always full parking lot at the top, walk the steps.
