“The SF Ballet Performs at the SF Opera House.”
Reviewed January 27, 2013

The SF Opera House is a classical hall with grand staircases. Every daughter deserves to be introduced to the dance here, with a front row seat in one of the boxes to see a performance of the Nutcracker Ballet. From that vantage point at the front of the balcony her sparkling eyes will take in all of the sweeping movement while her ears revel in the rich orchestral sound. As she grows she can sit closer, in the cheaper seats on the main floor to really see what the dancers are doing to leap and lift, pirouette and glide. Then she can come with a friend or two to see a world premier by the Ballet or a local premier like "The Little Mermaid." This is not Disneyland. This is really wonderful.

“Horrid, butchered Nutcracker version, poor dancing, like a kids school play”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

Was so excited to see the Nutcracker in a different country.

I almost left in disgust. If youre going to charge international prices $200 a ticket then your performance is going to have to live up to it.

I cant really remember there being any dancing almost for the entire first half. Lots of kids running around the stage. I paid for ballet dancers not the damn school play.

The story was dumbed down, like in American movies they have to point out the obvious!
And it was shortened. This I guess was probably for the children in the audience.
The Nutcracker is a ballet of high art, performed by top dancers in the rest of the world and should be considered thus, not treated like a kindergarten play.
The year before I saw it at the Royal Opera House in London. The full, properly performed version. There were plenty of kids. I myself used to be taken as a child. And sadly that was my comparison, I should have known better.

The lead female was great, the only saving grace. And Drosselmayer, doing magic tricks, during a ballet??!!!! really. No thank you.

“One of the world's best ballet companies -- in a stunning setting”
Reviewed January 4, 2013

SF Ballet brings together an international team of astonishing dancers. The reperatoire includes exciting works by cutting edge choreographers like Wheeldon and Welch as well as traditional full-length works such as Giselle, Swan Lake, and Don Quixote. A visit to the stunning War Memorial Opera house is a treat -- start your evening with a glass of champagne and bask in the elegance of the Beaux Arts architecture. Only London's Covent Garden offers as much romance, magic and superlative dancing!

“great dancers, timid programs”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

the full length ballets are awesome, but the short programs lack political and social courage (except for the frequent gender bending allusions, which is not all that brave in SF anymore), and often leave me cold.

“Loved the Nutcracker”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

We went for the nutcracker show and it was awesome. The dance , the show, the props, the lighting , the stage were perfect. In all it was a complete package .

It was magical and seeing the nutcracker might have just entered my list of annual holiday must-do's!
