We walked by this deli many times, staring through the windows; finally we made it for breakfast and are so glad we did. Classic horseshoe-shapped counter, classic dishes, the real deal. Next time we will try lunch and dinner ... but can highly recommend this for breakfast.

I had breakfast at David's Delicatessen. I sat at the counter but there are other rooms too. The food was good, although not exceptional.
The house made marmalade was very yummy.
The two other diner / breakfast places are on the street seemed busy.

This venerable S.F. deli is definitely on the skids. The service was terrible. Two separate parties actually got up and left the table next to us when they were not served within a reasonable period of time. The menu had a sandwich section that stated that “all sandwiches” were served with cole slaw, potato salad or French fries, and came with a choice of breads, which choice included a bagel. One member of our party ordered lox and cream cheese (which was listed in this “sandwich” section of the menu), on a bagel, with potato salad. When the lox, bagel and cream cheese arrived, the sandwich was not accompanied by potato salad. The waiter insisted that lox and cream cheese did not come with a side salad. (Perhaps a better time to inform a diner that the menu is incorrect would be when the order is placed?!) After getting a menu, reading it to him and some unpleasantness the potato salad eventually materialized. It turned out to be a waste of time. Clearly, whoever prepared the potato salad had neglected to season it; and, obviously, had not tasted it. There was no flavor to it, except a vaguely rancid taste. Another of our party ordered a pastrami sandwich. It was not accompanied by horseradish. In fact, there was no horseradish to be had when it was requested. This is a deli? Add the fact that there is a serious lack of cleanliness and the fly in one beer and you have a pretty good idea of our dining experience

Food is fine, but given SF standards that's a horrible statement. Over-priced because of the neighborhood. There are so many better options around town--don't settle for this one.
