Great ambience and service. We enjoyed the wine match suggested by the sommelier and the quality of the food was great. I had the best seafood risotto I have ever eaten.

The Big 4 is a classic San Francisco experience (one of the few left, and if you missed out on Ernie's you owe it to yourself to try The Big 4).

Big flavors (duck with apricot, wild boar chop) and an extensive wine list which includes some delightful half bottles.

The history is on the walls between the etched glass and the dark wood paneling, and if you ask your waiter you will be regaled with stories out of San Francisco's history.

I went to dinner with colleagues after a conference and we had a great time. The six of us arrived without a reservation around 8pm, and the maitre d' joked with us about doubtfully checking for tables, and having one materialize against all odds. It was very funny and welcoming.

The dining room is straight out of Mad Men, dark, luxurious paneling and upholstery, etc. Ideal for a business dinner, and the six of us, all ladies, felt like serious powerbrokers! It would also be very romantic with your significant other for a special occasion.

The menu was short, but covered everything you could possibly want -- from tuna tartare to wild boar. Everyone enjoyed their food, and I was particularly impressed with my risotto; it was perfectly cooked and the spring vegetables were absolutely gorgeous.

Cocktails are classic (get the Sazerac), as are the wines; the by the glass selections change periodically, and they aren't relegating lesser wines to that list. I enjoyed a glass of premier cru Chablis and was very pleased with it (perfect with the risotto).

Service was friendly but perfectly correct, well timed to allow us to get down to business (and bawdy girl talk, it must be said).
