“Wonderful Representation of American Art”
Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

The main exhibit of this museum is nearly all comprised of American art. The space has been designed to draw the guest in, without a lot of switching back thru rooms already seen. I'm a huge Antiques Roadshow fan which has taught me so much about American collectibles. And at the de Young you not only see great American art, but also furniture, glass (yes. Tiffany), silver and other items. Also, it was nice to see so much art from the East Coast. It's a gorgeous history lesson, and I highly recommend it to tourists from outside the US. You will leave with a sense of the American aesthetic.

“"The Fashion World of Jean-Paul Gaultier"”

encourages the use of public transportation by crediting the cost of bus travel in your admission ticket. Wonderful space for special exhibits such as the Gaultier show.

“Saw Girl with a Pearl Earring”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

What a lovely treat to visit SF and be able to see Vermeer's painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring. It's a stunning, evocative work - I gazed at it for quite a while. It's part of a small but beautiful show of paintings from a Dutch collection. Interesting marketing ploy, to use that painting as the cornerstone for the entire show and to charge a premium for admission. But oh well, it worked, and the whole show was worth it. The museum itself is quite large and the collections are uneven. We saw fascinating Pacific Island sculpture and artifacts, but so-so American paintings and contemporary art. I wish they would have focused more on California artists and themes; as a general museum, it just can't compete with the bit east coast museums or even with L.A. County Museum of Art. Nevertheless, it's a big museum with lots to see and impressive architecture. And of course the setting is splendid, in Golden Gate park near so many other attractions. Definitely worth a visit.

“Lovely collection, just the right size”
Reviewed March 1, 2013 via mobile

A lovely museum with beautiful art and antiques. It is just the right size to spend the morning walking through then have a picnic in the park. My daughter enjoyed it (5 years old) as it was interesting and not too big. I especially liked the "primitive art" and sculptures.

“It's exhausting because it's so huge!”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

The architecture alone is stunning (bring a student ID if you have one for a discount!) or you can go to the free observation level which is adjacent to the entrance (what a stunning view of SF and the Golden Gate Park!). Special exhibitions are extra usually, but we saw the Vatican collection of Indigenous art and it was included in the general admission as was a collection of war photos from the Middle East. So powerful I had to catch my breath literally and leave the room at one point. LOTS of goodies at the gift store at all price ranges. Free parking if you come at the right time, up to 4 hours.
