If you live in San Francisco or nearby or are going to be there sometime before August 19, run, do not walk, to see the exhibit "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk." There is no way I can adequately describe how fantastic and brilliant this exhibit is. I went with two friends and we all agreed that we'd never seen a finer exhibit. To see these clothes up close proves Gaultier's genius and astonishing creativity. There's not a wrong note anywhere. My friends live near S.F. so are going to go back and see it again. I could have spent several hours trying to take it all in. Absolutely wonderful!

Went to the de Young specifically for the Gaultier Exhibit. It was fantastic. Whether you are a fan of the designer or not, you'll be intrigued by the intricacy and the quality of it. Lots of good backstory on his influences and his philosophy.

They have done a great job with the redo, but make sure you buy tickets for a specific time for a special show as the line is long and slow. Also, be ready to submit to security search of items. Make sure to notice the "fault lines" that have been constructed on the ground in the entry ways :-)) Good but small gift shop, expensive food and drink. Well managed lines for shows. Make sure to go up in the tower - the view is amazing - BUT!!! they had an alarm go off when I was there and it shuts down the elevators and clears the building. We had to walk down 9 flights of stairs with a handicap. They said the only other option was to have firemen carry us down. The staff was excellent, but not as knowledgable as the situation required. Food, drink etc. not allowed int the exhibits.

We did not have time to go into the museum however we had a tip to go in and go to the 9th floor to observe the landscape of San Francisco. It was the best view ever!! You have to go and take a look-it is breath taking and FREE!

The De Young has amazing exhibits as well as wonderful permanent connections. With out paying you can:
1) visit the tower with the panoramic view of San Francisco
2) eat lunch at the cafe
The food is ok and the prices a little high for what you get
3) visit the gift shops

To get into the exhibits, you do have to pay
