We really enjoyed the San Francisco Maritime Museum. This Museum is part of the National Park Service. Part of the Museum is located in the Argonaut Hotel and another part is located on the Hyde Street Pier. There is a great deal of the Museum that is free. There are a number of vessels at the Hyde Street Pier that require an admission fee but it's very reasonable. Our entire family was admitted free with my parents golden age passport.

There are a number of folks that work at the Museum that are involved in Maritime model building and were happy to share their work with our kids. The boys really enjoyed seeing the modles they had built. One gentleman had a model that included a steam engine that ran. He showed them how it worked and then started it for them. It was very cool!

We are not big museum people but we really enjoyed a couple of hours at the San Francisco Maritime Museum. The National Park Service website for the museum can be found at http://www.nps.gov/safr/index.htm

In addition to visiting the historic vessels on display at Hyde Pier (US$5 to enter and explore four vessels there) you can visit the actual museum (free) just across the street on Jefferson, next to the Argonaut Hotel.

This museum is a quick stop, offering general information and historical displays of the ships on display at Hyde Pier. You can also learn about the history of sea trade and its role in developing and shaping early San Francisco economy, community and society.

I must enjoyed the area in the back which discussed the treacherous time old captions had navigating their way into the San Francisco Bay area and the numerous ship wrecks that have resulted because of the climate and weather conditions here.

We recommend combining the Maritime Museum with a visit to Hyde Pier where historic vessels are docked, which can be entered and explored! Collectively, this is a very good experience for visitors to San Francisco.

My husband and I really enjoyed this - seems like something kids would love too. You get to climb aboard a variety of ships and see their inner workings.

We love museums and this one was fantastic. You get to go aboard a steamer and giant clipper... Both were fantastic. It is only $5 and well worth it. you also get some great views of the bay and the city as they are well above the docks. Considering that most museums and things to do in SF are expensive, if you are on a budget it is a very cool place to visit.

It's a quick visit but the price is right and the map exhibit is very interesting.
