“nice hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 14, 2006

I enjoyed the Crown Plaza - pleasant staff, clean rooms, good location.

I used Hotwire - $89 + tax = $101 per night. The desk clerk said their contract with Hotwire was for only smoking rooms. Hotels seem to give the worst rooms to Hotwire & Priceline customers. There must have been a lot of available rooms, he gave me a room that he said was no-smoking. The room was on the lowest floor (5th).

Positives -
-close to many restaurants. Try the nearby Café Espresso or Sears Fine Foods for breakfast. The food court in the lower level of Macy’s is nice for a quick lunch.
-close to the cable car & other public transportation lines. The $24 weekly pass is a good deal. The pass covers cable cars, buses & trolleys, but not BART.
-The hotel staff was helpful & pleasant.
-The hotel was clean & well run. The beds were especially comfortable.

Negatives –
-a lot of noise, especially at night. The first night they emptied nearby dumpsters on at least three occasions during the night. Rooms on higher floors might be a little quieter.
-The area immediately around the hotel and Union Square appear very safe. However, only a block or two west of Union Square is the notoriously dangerous Tenderloin District.
-Some of the furniture was overdue for replacement, but overall the quality was ok.

Spent 2 nights in a standard king room, on the 21st floor, which offered a nice view of Nob Hill.

Room was terribly small, but cozy, fresh looking and very clean. The bedding was amazingly comfortable...and nice Crowne amenities were provided to ensure a restful sleep. Great shower, and clean but small bathroom. Room was quiet, windows kept the street noise out. Small but clean lobby, with a nice little bar. Service was very friendly and top notch. Internet access ($10/day, $5/hr) was reliable, wireless is available in the lobby area as well.

Valet parking was quite expensive ($40/day), however you can opt to park 2 doors down in the Sutter St garage for $27/day ($30/day with in/out).

Great location for shopping, strolling around Union Square, the art galleries, museums & more. Fine restaurants aplenty in the immediate area, and Chinatown is pretty close as well. Cablecar to the Wharf stops right across the street (they are usually quite full from passengers starting the ride at Union Square, so you may have to wait for a few cars to go by before finding room on one).

Despite having had a smallish room, it was a good value for location and level of service. Would gladly stay here again.

  • Liked — location
  • Disliked — surcharge for internet, expensive parking
  • Tips/Secrets — car not needed in Union Square area...public transit much easier.

I stayed here for 5 nights. The room was large and nicely furnished - it was on one of the higher floors (25th). The deli next door is good for breakfast, as is the diner adjacent and the french cafe opposite. The bar and restaurant lack soul, but there are plenty of other places close by which mean you don't have to eat there. Perfect location for all things downtown.

we arrived at the hotel for the 1st 4 nights of a 2 week holiday to celebrate our 25th anniversary and were immediately impressed with both the hotel and the staff. we were shown our room by a lovely bell-boy and were very pleased - we were on the 22nd floor and had a great view! the room itself was very large, 2 double beds, comfy armchair and footstool by the window, work desk, tv etc, large bathroom although not sure about the wallpaper!-the rest of the room was plainer, plenty of hanging space. the bed was very comfy, air con and opening window. very clean, plenty of space, and what a location! the cable car stop is right outside {although it was always full]},shops, restaurants, china town all on the doorstep and we walked pretty much everywhere, even to fishermans wharf, coit tower, lombard street etc- good exercise, nice to get a "feel" for the city, and we could enjoy the great food knowing we;d earned it!for a hotel in the heart of san fran this was brilliant - didn;t try the restaurant although it smelled good when you walked through the lobby! we used lori;s diner across the road for breakfast - lovely and very retro - and ate out every night. it was great at the end of a long day to relax with a glass of wine and look at the view and again at night with a nightcap looking at all the lights.

My husband, 2 teenage kids and myself just returned from 5 days in SF. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Union Square and had a large beautiful room with a wonderful view, generous breakfasts(Only $10 more than the regular room rate for 2 breakfasts). The hotel was in a great locaton (Sutter and Powell) so just 1 block off Union Square. The room was quiet, had air conditioning, (which was needed due to a heat wave) and can't think of anything wrong with the hotel, staff, etc. We checked in a few hours early without problems. We would definately stay there again!

I enjoyed everything about my stay at the Crowne Plaza. The location was great; near Union square shops, handy to the cable car (if you like that form of transport - I prefer foot). The food at the conference I attended was excellent. The internet connection could have been cheaper though - like free. I've stayed in cheaper hotels where it's free. The relaxation pack provided was a bit of a gimmick, but nice that they tried. The staff were all very friendly and courteous. Overall very enjoyable, and would stay again.

San Fran was our first port of call on a month long trip. We arrived before checkin time but they allowed us to check straight in. The service was second to none, with everyone from the front desk and concierge to the bartender/room service (a special mention to Tom) totally professional, courteous and friendly. Our room was well appointed, well serviced and large. We liked it so much we rebooked for our return to San Fran before flyng home to Australia. It's handy to shops, restaurants and local attractions. The cable cars to Fishermans wharf run alongside the hotel and Chinatown is just around the corner. It's a tad expensive but we definitely got what we paid for.
