“Great location”
Reviewed August 28, 2009

I do the Marriott for one important reason - you always know what you're going to get. This was no exception. Nice hotel, nice room. Bathroom was stupidly tiny and there was no full length mirror in room but other than that, excellent. Great location, I strongly recommend Union Square. Lots of bars and restaurants around the area. Good luck getting on the cable car, we bought a three day pass and did not successfully board once, it is constantly packed. We caught the bus a few times. We mostly walked everywhere. Beautiful city. Pacific Heights is gorgeous. Cow Harbour is divine, loved it. Hated Fishermans Wharf, it's full of cheap cr*p, total waste of space. HATED it. Alcatraz was excellent. Lombard street was just so charming, well worth the hike up one mother of a hill. I lost weight in SF! Walk to North Beach from Union Square, through Chinatown, you get some really good views of city. Go to Vesuvio bar next to the Citylights bar, it's where Jack Kerouac and other 'beat generation' names used to hang out apparently - we had a good time there! Ate in a very good restaurant, can't remember the name, it's recommended in the Lonely Planet.

Amazing location in the heart of San Francisco, central to everything! The room was impeccable: clean, quiet, elegant, comfortable beds, high end linens and towels... definitely more than a 3 star experience. Staff was attentive, generous, everyone seemed to be enjoying their jobs. (There seemed to be a sense of pride and excitement, perhaps due to its recent remake into a Marriott.) We happened upon an amazing AAA rate online while browsing for hotels, made a few extra requests (they couldn't guarantee) like early check-in, extra pillows... and they met them all! The only things that we would have liked were a refrig/microwave (not standard in this hotel). We did use the well-equipped and -maintained fitness center and the guest laundry, but did not eat in the restaurant or bar area. The decor throughout the hotel was beautiful--bold vibrant color, modern designs--though understated (did I mention "elegant"?!)

This is the worst Marriott Hotel I have stayed in. The plumbing is heard all night - sounded like my neighbors' bathroom was next to my pillow. There was no valet when we pulled up so we had to keep circling the block until we could pull up, quickly unload our bags, then my husband went looking for parking - not easy in SF/Union Square. We were guaranteed a top floor and they tried to put me on the lowest floor - I did win that battle. The topper was when I called Marriott help they transferred me to a customer service center that was closed!!

This should really be marketed as a Motel 6 - but without the price benefit.

We stayed at the Marriott Union Square for 4 days. The property is newly renovated. The lobby is very nice, modern and spacious. The room was beautiful, large, and completely renovated. We paid for a junior suite and access to the conceirge lounge, which was basically a full servie breakfast. The fitness room is large and has all new equipment. The location (as many have noted) can't be beat: one block to Union Sq; Cable car stops at the corner, short walk to Chinatown. We will stay here again when we return to San Francisco.

The hotel was perfect for our four day stay in San Francisco. The central location made it very convenient to the trolley and excellent shopping in Union Square. We were able to walk or catch public transit to Chinatown as well as all of the tourist and cultural sites in the city including Fisherman's Wharf. The concierge was very helpful.

As someone who travels to SF maybe four times a year, I've become quite content staying at the Marriott property on 55 Fourth Street, the full-service Marriott. It's easy to get to off the BART and close to everything. Just for kicks, I decided to stay at the newly-converted Union Square Marriott up on Powell (you know, before the hills get REALLY steep). Loved it. Got a great room (2801), one of, I'm told, only six in the hotel that has a sweeping view of Coit Towers, the bay and is a really large room with a separate living room, bedroom and a bathroom that's two rooms (big shower, vanity and then toilet bath/shower). The concierge lounge is huge and has views on the other side looking out toward Union Square and downtown. We had wine/beer in the lobby but opted to eat elsewhere (so should you, it's SF!). Unsure on parking, but you don't need to be driving in this city anyway. Close to everything, Starbucks across the street. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Customer service was excellent, except at the front desk, front desk could be a little more friendly/helpful. The doormen were excellent, truly the best customer service. The rest of the staff was excellent. Rooms were nice, very comfortable beds. Restaurant was great, good food and great service, good prices. Great location. Negatives? The cost of parking! $50.00 per night! I know parking in S.F. is valuable, that $50 per night seems to be a bit extreme. Wish hotel had a pool. Enjoyed our stay, will go back!
