“Very Good Hotel”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

This is a Marriott. One has certain expectations when staying at a Marriott: you expect an above-average minimum of standards but understand it's not the Ritz. Within that framework, this hotel meets its mark perfectly. Every Marriott should be this perfect in meetings its standards.

The hotel is located a couple blocks off Union Square. It's seconds away from everything, but just far enough away to have room to walk on the sidewalk. Despite being 29 stories, it has more of a small hotel feel. It isn't one of those places with tons of people hanging out in the lobby.

Check-in was fast. All requests made on the reservation were honored. All elevators were working. (Seemed to be a problem someone else had mentioned in a review, so it's been fixed!) My room was on a higher floor, which cut down on the street noise problem that many hotels in this area suffer. The room was incredibly clean. Not to imply that other Marriotts are dirty, but this hotel is so clean that everything looks brand new.

The staff was attentive without being intrusive. Another poster mentioned the garage issue, but that's a SF issue more than a hotel issue. It would be a good idea to drive around to the Sutter side of the hotel, drop the bags with the doormen, then park. The parking is up the steep hill next door to the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor and, if possible, a room with a water view.

Excellent clean hotel. Went with family and they were very friendly with the kids. Easy valet parking helped a lot. Walkable to many areas. I will stay here again when back to this city. We skipped eating breakfast and walked to the pastry shops for coffee and croissants. The location is at Union Square where the trolleys are. I realize this is a tourist trap but one can't go to SF without riding on one.

You can't get a much better location for hopping on and off the cable cars and visiting Union Square and Chinatown. There is a cable car stop on the corner (a Starbucks too). Union Sqare is a block away. Chinatown is about 3-4 blocks away. We loved the convenience of this place during our week stay.

The staff was helpful and accommodating. The bar staff was also very friendly and made some good recommendations for restaurants and places to go for fun.

The thing I appreciate about Marriott is consistency with their rooms. Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable and we had more room than I would hav imagined for a downtown hotel.

I would recommend this hotel if location is important to you and you like what the Marriott brand provides.

Completed a long weekend in the SF and the location of the hotel was perfect. Cable car line stops at the hotel intersection which worked great as we were returning to the hotel, Union Square a block away, short walk to Chinatown, and to the BART stop. Hotel staff was pleasant and accommodating.

Stayed there last night while in San Francisco for some fun.

First impression wasn't a great one. The valet stand is in a filthy dank garage, and if there's a way to directly enter the hotel from it, the valet guy didn't point us to it. So we walked back out of the garage, then around the block (carrying all of our stuff) to enter the hotel from the front.
Lobby was a bit stuffy, didn't seem like the AC was running. It was also a bit cramped and unimpressive. Front desk staff were very friendly though. Our room wasn't ready, but they quickly checked our bags for us, then called us when the room was ready (only about 20 minutes later).
I paid for a city/bay view room. I think we got one of the worst rooms that they price up for that feature, because directly across from our window was a hideous and huge industrial box on the roof of the building next door. If we were one floor up, or two rooms over, it would have been fine, but where we were, it was a terrible eye sore, and blocked a good portion of the view that we I paid to have.
The cleanliness of the room also left a lot to be desired. There were stains on the top comforter (some sort of dark liquid) and what looked like old blood or maybe (hopefully) fruit juice stains on the top sheet. We were too tired to complain when we noticed, so we just stripped off the offending articles and slept with what was left. There was wadded up toilet paper on the bathroom floor and sink (thankfully it only looked to have been used to dry hands or something). Other than that, the bathroom was pretty clean (no stains on floor, toilet or tub).

The bed was okay for comfort, but the pillows aren't too great. They were of the feather variety, so when you put your head on them, it sinks down immediately all the way to the bed. Thankfully there were enough on the bed to double up. The chair next to the bed has to be some sort of medieval torture device, or at the very least wasn't made for someone taller than 5'9". It was terribly uncomfortable. The desk chair was much better for sitting around in.

Overall, there's really just nothing impressive about this Marriott. It pales in comparison to the Marquis Marriott I have previously reviewed, and if I go Marriott in SF again, I'm definitely going to that one, not this one.

It's safe, and the staff is nice though, so if you do end up staying here, you certainly won't have a miserable stay. I don't want to tell people that they should never stay here, only that if you do, keep your expectations at a nominal level.

Room Tip: If you pay for a city/bay view room, try to be above floor 23 to avoid the issue I mentioned.

Save your Marriott Rewards points for this very convenient, centrally-located, family-friendly hotel! We did and we were extremely pleased with our choice for an adult only family vacation! We were celebrating our youngest son's 21st birthday and all getting together as we all live in separate cities. San Francisco was our #1 destination choice because of all the exciting things to do. We also saved our American Airline points as well leaving us lots of money to spend on all the REALLY fun stuff!! Our oldest son, and his wife who are both 26 were our navigators. They used their tremendously successful "Urban Spoon" app to locate many nearby fabulous restaurants without advanced reservations. We ate like kings: Sushi, Lots of Seafood, Italian, Thai, New York-Style Pizza, Cafe's, a Crepery, the full gamut, ALL within walking distance! The Concierge Lounge was excellent for providing continental breakfast, drinks and tasty snacks to save even more money and the Bistro Bar was comfortable for relaxing after a day of sightseeing, although a little pricey. The staff we met were all very friendly, helpful, and attentive when needed. It was so nice to have the Cable Car line right on the street adjacent to the hotel. We booked 2 rooms with magnificent views of the city for 4 nights and got the 5th night free with our points, and right across the street at Walgreen's we bought the 7-day Muni passes good for buses, cable cars, trolleys, and subway rides. With the $ we saved using our points we were able to tour many of San Francisco's most popular neighborhoods, enjoyed strolling & dining in Fisherman's Wharf and reserved Alcatraz Night Tour tickets online 3 mos. ahead. We were conveniently picked up for a fabulous Sonoma Winery Tour on day 2, and rented a car from Avis 2 blocks away for our Highway 1 Beach Drive on Day 3, spending time at several beautiful beaches, eating lunch in Santa Cruz and ice cream in Monterey Bay. We also managed to squeeze in Muir Woods, Golden Gate Park, and Sausalito on Day 4! The hotel helped us arrange transportation to and from the airport via Lorrie 15-passenger van. All in all, we would absolutely do it all over again! And of course we WILL return using the Marriott Union Square as our excellent home base again because we still have many other things to explore in this vibrant and fun city!

Room Tip: The corner Junior King Suite room was awesome!

The Hotel is located only one block away from Union Square. A Walgreens store is right across the road. Several affordable and reasonably good restaurants are nearby. The cable car stop is also almost in front of the hotel. However, the cable cars are usually full with tourists, thus no chance to get on it. It is easy to get from the airport to the hotel by BART. The Powell station is in walking distance, although you will have to walk a bit uphill.
The hotel bar has excellent wines. We did not try the breakfast, there a plenty of options near by. There is a bus station down the road, which can be used to go to the Golden Gate Bridge.
Funny: Although American Hotel Rooms seem to have usually quite a lot of power plugs, our room (not a suite) had about 20 of them.

Room Tip: We stayed there now for the 2nd time and always had a room to the north side. If you are high enough...
