the place is very nicely decorated, the food is well prepared - no, i should say the foo dis magically prepared. i have never had food ba so flavorful. the rabbit, the duck, the mustard greens, all in a perfect blend, all well served, all magically flavorful.

the service was outstanding, never anything amiss, always available an on time.

it was a bit loud when we arrived but our neighbors were on their way out and the annoyance was lifted.

Although we were only in San Francisco for 4 days, we ate in a lot of places. We were disappointed a number of times. I would say that Gitane blew all the others out of the water! It is hidden down a little back alley, and has incredible, inventive, avant-garde, and yet cozy interior design. The menu is short, but sweet. Neither of us could decide on mains, so we switched with each other halfway through, and both the rabbit and the quail were fantastic. I had a chocolate cake with bacon ice cream for dessert, and I was actually ready to lick the plate. In addition, we got a great wine recommendation that had us talking for days afterwards, and the manager brought us some complimentary bubbly because we had to wait a few minutes when we arrived. All in all, a great experience! We will definitely be back.

We went to Gitane on the last night of our trip as we were running low on dollar and it had the $$ rating on tripadvisor...but it was a little pricier than expected. Food was a la carte/gourmet style and very tasty. Reservation definitely needed to avoid sitting outside which was a little chilly on a January night and the plain outdoor area was far less classy than the food!

We ate here two years ago when visiting SF and made reservations the night before the new review in the Chronicle. We had 8:30 reservations and got there about 7:50 thinking we would have a drink in the bar before dinner. We got served and stood for about 15 minutes before seats became open at the bar. We ended up spending over an hour in the bar, but did not mind because the ambiance of the bar is fabulous. When we were finally seated the service was superb, Matt kept stopping by and checking on us. We had the salad with jambon, the grilled baby artichokes, and the canalones. All was delicious. The service was superb and we will return next time we get to the left coast.
