“Posh nosh - yummy but pricey”

We went to Gitane on the last night of our trip as we were running low on dollar and it had the $$ rating on tripadvisor...but it was a little pricier than expected. Food was a la carte/gourmet style and very tasty. Reservation definitely needed to avoid sitting outside which was a little chilly on a January night and the plain outdoor area was far less classy than the food!

“Wonderful. Once Again!”
Reviewed January 12, 2013 via mobile

We ate here two years ago when visiting SF and made reservations the night before the new review in the Chronicle. We had 8:30 reservations and got there about 7:50 thinking we would have a drink in the bar before dinner. We got served and stood for about 15 minutes before seats became open at the bar. We ended up spending over an hour in the bar, but did not mind because the ambiance of the bar is fabulous. When we were finally seated the service was superb, Matt kept stopping by and checking on us. We had the salad with jambon, the grilled baby artichokes, and the canalones. All was delicious. The service was superb and we will return next time we get to the left coast.

“Just great”
Reviewed January 3, 2013 via mobile

Highest praise for a class act. 5 stars does not do it justice. Our wait staff was fabulous, the food and wine superb and the surroundings and the vibe cannot be beat. I do not know if lane way dining is a new thing or this city but this place takes dining out to a new level.
My veal cannelloni was so tasty and the opah beautifully cooked was accompanied by some mushrooms which were just right.
We followed with a cheese and wine selection and still wanted more. Trust your waiter/ waitress; we did and were so glad we did.
Our best meal in San Francisco - please support this place so it is still doing wonderful things when we next visit this great city.

“The Best in San Francisco!!”
Reviewed December 21, 2012

We chose Gitane because it was on a list of recommendations from our hotel concierge and was close to our hotel so we gave it a try and it was spectacular! If you are looking for great food, great service and a wonderful atmosphere this is the place. Try the opah dish it was awesome. We will definately be back when we return to SF.

“A Most Memorable Meal”
Reviewed December 21, 2012

We recently indulged in the tasting menu with wine pairings at this charming restaurant. A perfect dining experience: Each small plate was unique and complex; the wine pairings were well thought out and offered some delightful surprises; the wait staff was knowledgeable and professional as well as relaxed and pleasantly friendly; the chef making a visit to our table to discuss the offerings was a special touch. We are looking forward to our next dining adventure at Gitane. We highly recommend this little restaurant for a special dinner when visiting San Francisco.
