“Good Budget Hotel for family travel”
Reviewed July 22, 2014

This Motor Inn is very basic - nothing fancy, the room decor is a bit dated but it was clean, friendly, reasonably priced and in a great location. There is no lobby, no dining, no pool, just the parking, check-in room, and 3 floors of rooms but we didn't come to San Francisco to stay in our hotel - just needed a clean, economical, comfortable place to sleep and come and go from for our family of 4 trip and for that Columbus Motor Inn fit our needs
Free parking in this touristy pricey area and walking point location are two of the main reasons to stay here

PROs
Free parking
Nice staff. One guy (didn't catch his name) always seemed to be there! But he was very nice and helpful
Walking distance to many key tourist sites and transportation services (double decker buses, cable car, bus stop #30 right outside door) easy walk to Fisherman's wharf, Pier 33, Ghirardelli square. Convenient Walgreens at the end of the block, We walked to two breakfast places - Pat's Cafe and Hollywood Cafe- both good places

CONS
Not really a con as the main reason I picked the hotel was the free parking (other hotels in the area charge around $50!)just a word of advice the parking takes some serious maneuvering skills as the spots are tiny(they make use of every square inch of the garage) Be prepared but again it's such a great reason to stay here if you have a car. (Our trip included Sonoma area days ) We parked the car the day we checked in and didn't move it until we checked out

ROOM
I request and received a 3rd floor room with a view
We stayed in room 301, had a terrific view (we could see Coit Tower, church, water) a large room good for family of 4. no balcony (but nice big windows you can open for air) and was right across from the elevator, corner room.
Very basic, the decor is a bit dated but it was clean, cable box is laying against the wall on top of the flat screen TV which was a bit odd. wi-fi was a bit slow.
I requested a refrigerator (only $5 a day) very helpful when traveling with kids
The shower/toilet room was probably the most dated part of room and smelled a bit our first night so I bought an air fresher the 1st night at walgreens
There is a safe in the closet which is nice to have
There is a restaurant/bar across the street that was a bit noisy one night but being on the 3rd floor it didn't keep me up at all - the view definitely made up for any typical big city street noise you might expect.
Other reviews mentioned Bimbo's which you can see from my picture is on the side of the hotel we stayed in, (bathroom window looks out to the building and more great views) we were there mid week so heard no noisy so not sure if that would be a problem on weekend nights

when we checked in we were told they were going to steam clean our room carpets during our stay and we worried that we would come back to a musty smelling room but we didn't and it was nice to know we were walking on a freshly cleaned carpet (although I wish it had been done before we were in the room but oh well) they did a good job. Had a chance to speak to the cleaning lady who mentioned she was a bit behind cleaning our room, but only because she was making sure the carpet cleaners did a good job!

SUMMARY
I do like staying at hotels with nice amenities but when traveling with a family on a budget and you want to spend your money wisely in an expensive city and make the most of your time enjoying the sites nearby the Columbus Motor Inn is a great option. I would stay here again.

This was our first time in San Francisco & we were here only for one night as it was a stop over to our trip to Napa in May. The hotel is nice, the room was in good condition, clean & comfortable. The location can't be beat & they offer free parking! The staff was very helpful. I dont recall the young man's name at the front desk but we were trying to get tickets to Alcatraz for the next day & he gave us a great tip....he told us to get up early & head over to the ticket booth by 6:30am to wait on line for tickets, if you get there early enough they hand out about 20 tickets, first come first serve & he was right! We got there and there were already a few people on line but my husband & I managed to get 2 tickets & spent the whole morning at Alcatraz (which was a great experience and I recommend doing). They also gave us maps & directions. The day we were leaving, we checked out but they allowed us to leave our car in the parking lot until 3pm so we could sight see more & that was extremely helpful. We had a tiny balcony & could see Coit Tower to the right. The location & the cost for one night was worth it, we walked everywhere. The cable car dropped us off down the block (I think we got off a stop early). We would probably stay here again.

We found this hotel to be clean and quiet. It was within walking distance to all the things we wanted to see. We parked the car when we got there and were able to walk everywhere. The staff was very helpful.

The pros to this motel are location, price and free parking. It is an easy walk to Fisherman's wharf, a cable car stop, Pier 33 for Alcatraz tours, and Ghirardelli square. We never needed our car and the free parking is a major bonus in this pricey area. The motel is very dated and worn out. Room 311 faces another building, so no view to speak of. Upon arrival, our window was wide open and there was no screen. Could be an issue with young kids. Overall it was fairly clean. If you don't plan to spend much time in your room, this place will save you some money.

Stayed here for 1 night before trip down the coast. Staff very nice. Hotel itself is dated, carpets in hallways need to be replaced. Room was big but old looking. Good location to walk places: wharf, Ghiradelli. Wouldn't want to be here for an extended time. For the amount they charged I thought it would be better.

We were here only one night, and in the hotel only to sleep, but the staff could not have been more helpful (helping us with getting a bus to AT&T park, and with on-site parking), and our room, from what little we saw of it, was quite nice, with a view of the city and easy and quick Wi-Fi. More than we expected for the money.

Room Tip: Our room, 301, had a terrific view and was right across from the elevator -- and on our night, quiet...

This Motor Inn was just as we had hoped - clean, friendly, and in a great location. We walked everywhere: to the Wharf, Ghirardelli Chocolates, two great breakfast stops (Pat's Cafe- around the corner and Joanie's Happy Days Diner- further down Columbus Ave) . Even our San Francisco Tour (Dylan's Tours) picked us up on Columbus Ave . Free parking was great since we didn't drive anywhere. The Motor Inn called a cab for us to take to dinner one night. It was very inexpensive and worth the convenience. We bought some bottled water and snacks at Walgreens which was just a block away. Our room was very quiet and we could see Coit Tower from the window. The price was right too!

Room Tip: Friends who stayed in the same hotel with us thought the ice machine that was right outside their ro...
