“Great base for San Fran sightseeing”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

The Columbus is brilliantly located for sightseeing to Fishermans Wharf, Alcatraz, the cable car net work etc. It's about 15 minutes walk from the Wharf area, which means it's both quieter, and cheaper, than the stuff right on the wharf. The service at front desk is a bit variable; sometimes you get attitude, sometimes you get great help, but overall I'd definitely recommend it. Only challenge is that there arent any good restaurants really close to the hotel, but if you walk uphill for about 20 minutes you get to italian precinct, and then you're spoiled for choice.

We stayed here two nights for one of our getaway from the Redding heat San Francisco stays. The room was simple, but very clean. It also had an adjacent room that my wife liked so she could read when she wakes up in the middle of the night. It is an easy walk to Fisherman's Wharf and has free parking, which is not that common in the area. We will definitely stay here again.

This review pretty much echoes other reviews. The price is high, but in line with the neighborhood. Parking is extremely tight. For all practical purposes there is no lobby. Our safe did not work and we did not have a comfortable chair in the room. We just had an empty space ( which we used for our bikes).

The main advantage to the Columbus Motor Inn is its location. Considering that, it is also reasonably priced. We were in the heart of the Italian area and walking distance to China Town and Fisherman's Wharf. The Muni Bus also stops on the same block of the hotel.

The lobby is small and staffed with very friendly desk clerks who have a good knowledge of restaurants, attractions, and public transportation. We knew we could count on 10-year veteran Noah to send us to the right places and tell us how to get there!

The rooms are surprisingly large, great for families. The furniture is older, but functional. We had a nice-sized round table with two wooden chairs. The dresser had at least ten roomy drawers. The bathroom was nice sized and the water pressure was very good. Although the hotel is somewhat old and a bit worn, it was very clean. The WiFi is free. We've stayed at many much more expensive and "lavish" hotels that couldn't give us the comfortable feeling we get at The Columbus.

Although there is no food service, there are numerous excellent restaurants within walking distance, including Pat's Cafe for a killer breakfast or lunch (I will also have a review of Pat's).

Parking is free, which is somewhat of a shock in the North Beach area.

Room Tip: This visit, our room was on the second level above Columbus Street and we were afraid that noise wou...

Pros: The beds were decently comfortable. It was clean. Located right in downtown near Fisherman's Wharf. The shower was decent. Desk clerk gave helpful directions.

Cons: The toilet was dented, there was no breakfast, and for the absurdly high price we got double beds. Also, the parking was very tight.

Although we have stayed in different areas of the city during our 11 visits to SF, July 2013 was our 4th consecutive stay at the Columbus Motor Inn. We hope to make Sept 2013 our 5th visit. We love staying here for several reasons.
1. There is a bus stop right out side. The famous trolly is an easy walk.
2. Chinatown, Financial District, Fisherman's Wharf are just a few of the attractions with an easy walk of the Inn.
3. Free Parking!
4. Food- Chinese, Italian, American you name it - you can walk there.
5. Friendly Staff - always ready with recommendations, directions.
6. FREE PARKING!

Don't be afraid of the street view rooms. Yes, there is noise during the day and up until midnight or so, but after that, it is very quiet - we leave our balcony doors open all night.

Room Tip: We have stayed here 4 times and have never had a bad room. I love the ones with a balcony , even on...

We stayed here for three nights as part of a Las Vegas and California road trip. I honestly can't fault the hotel in any way. The location could not have been better, the room comfortably accommodated our family of 5 with two teenagers and compared to the costs of most SF hotels it represents excellent value for money. The only public areas are reception and the corridors but these are kept spotlessly clean as are the bedrooms. Easy to access while arriving in the city by car too, not just because of the free car parking Has everything you really need while visiting San Francisco.

Will stop here again if fortunate enough to be visiting co in the future.
