This hotel's location cannot be beat. You are so central, everything of interest to tourists, is minutes away. The parking is included, which is awesome. The rooms are not huge, but spotless. Very colorful. Breakfast is included, and is ok, not great. But saves you a few dollars, if you are traveling on a budget. The staff is great, Oscar at the reception is awesome. Great tips and recommendations.
Don't expect a 5 star hotel, an you will enjoy your stay. At this hotel you are definitely getting more for your money.

My wife stay at the Hotel Del Sol 4 or 5 times a year while visiting family in San Francisco, with the last time this past August and September (7 days). We have never been disappointed. While this property is an older hotel it has always been maintained and updated. Moreover, there has never been any problems with our reservations; usually a room upgrade if available; free parking (everyone else charges $45 to $50 per night); welcome back gift; free Internet service (and it is fast with an easy hook up); clean rooms and grounds; room that are always well cleaned, stocked and equipped (towels, soap, ice bucket, working television, radio and lights, very comfortable linens, mattress, and pillows); a nice basic free breakfast (toast, juice, rolls, hard boiled eggs, oat mean, hot chocolate, tea and coffee); and if you happen to have good weather in the City the pool is very nice option (it is adequately heated).

The entire staff is outstanding, friendly, and always willing to help, which includes Ron, the GM, Oscar, Richard, Lisa, and the various night desk clerks. In addition, the Hotel is centrally located to all the good things: Good restaurants, shopping, Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square and the Marina District. To be sure, individuals, family, or groups, the Hotel Del Sol is the right choice. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Any floor is good - remember, this is a large city so some noise can be heard at night.

Green Features: The hotel goes green wherever and whenever possible.

We loved our stay at Hotel Del Sol. It was perfect for our family holiday with two little kids. The breakfast is great. Best coffee we had in America! The courtyard next to the pool was great for eating our dinner. We often bought food at Real Foods and brought it back to eat in the courtyard. Perfect for little kids. The pool is heated and lovely after a full day of sightseeing. The staff were lovely and helpful. The location was good but not central to the tourist locations which suited us fine. It's near the Cow Hollow local district. The marina is close and there's parks and playgrounds one street over. And the car park is included! Perfect.

The Hotel Del Sol is a fantastic option for smaller families. It's smack dab in the middle of the Marina/Cow Hollow district and surrounded by a number of amazing restaurant options (essential if you are someone that likes to eat good food). The place would be easy to miss, but for the fantastic bright orange and gold signage that fronts both Lombard and Webster streets. This is a courtyard with a very narrow driveway, but don't worry: you can drive on it! Great signage for that, too; and plenty of (free) spillover parking across the alley-like street (Moulton) between Lombard and the Hotel. Reservations were easily made online. We booked a junior suite, with separate bedroom and living areas. The sofa converted into a bed for the kiddies. The room was clean, brightly painted, and pleasant. Natural light in the bedroom was limited due to the trees on Greenwich Street, but we didn't spend that much time in there anyway, except at night when it didn't matter. Flat screen TVs are featured in both the living room and bedroom: nice at the end of a long day of sightseeing for the kiddies to watch what they want and us to watch what we want. The bedroom included an alarm clock with iPhone/iPod dock. The continental breakfast provided was nicely supplied with boiled eggs, bagels, oatmeal, pastries, orange juice, coffee, and tea. The courtyard around the pool was a pleasant place to eat (provided you could find a table). The pool was enjoyed by the males in my family, and beach towels are laid out on the lawn chairs for anyone's use--nice to not have to ask. My only issues were as follows:

1) The older plumbing caused a backup one morning. A call to the front desk resulted in a maintenance man arriving and solving the problem within minutes.

2) No coffee maker or microwave in-room. I filled out a survey for the hotel, and they informed me that these can be provided upon request. This would have been nice to know *during* our stay, not after. It was not disclosed to us at any time. I kind of expect this to be standard for any hotel these days (automatically).

3) The recently redesigned bathroom did not have a fan or window, so the whole suite got very fogged over when anyone took a shower; but this did not prove to be too much of a problem if you opened the windows in the other rooms.

4) Bathrooms have bar soap for the sink, but no soap dishes. This only seems minor before you try to get those slippery little suckers to stay on the slanted sink edge, until you give up and allow the soap to fall to the bottom. You can imagine how this can get gross really quickly with two boys.

So all in all, I would highly recommend this place. It's an easy walk to the Palace of Fine Arts, Ghirardelli, and Fisherman's Wharf. The location and price more than make up for the shortcomings.

Regarding the lack of a fan/window in your suite, I will certainly forward your comments to the Department Manager for further review. Also, I'm happy to share that all rooms and suites now have soap dishes in the bathrooms. Although a coffee maker and/or microwave are not a standard amenity in our rooms (they are provided in our suites with kitchenettes), we are more than happy to provide one or both upon request for a small one time fee.

We look forward to welcoming you back whenever your travels may lead you back to San Francisco and thank you for choosing the Hotel Del Sol!

I loved Hotel Del Sol for so many reasons. We stayed there for 6 nights at the end of August. When you first walk into the hotel it has a Mad Men feel which I loved. The room felt brand new, nicely decorated and very clean (I'm very picky about this kind of thing). Everyone keeps talking about the size of the room, but they fail to mention there is a very large walk in closet in the room where we could not only hang up all our clothes but store our 4 suitcases freeing up space in the room. We were two adults, a 13 year old and an 11 year old and we were not cramped at all. But we were also not in the room all day, only there from about 8 pm on each day. Another great thing about Del Sol is the neighbourhood. It is on the edge of the very upscale and trendy Pacific Heights. The house they used in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire is just a few blocks over. If you walk two streets up to Union Street, you will find great shops and restaurants. In fact, we ate dinner at a different restaurant on Union every night. If you walk one block the other way it is Filmore Street, another trendy street with tons of shops and restaurants. And yes, you are at the corner of the famous Lombard Street. I loved that the neighbourhood was very safe to walk with my family at night. In fact, we walked to every point of interest from this hotel. You could stay in one of the $800 a night hotels downtown, but Market Street is scary even during the day. Why wouldn't anyone prefer to stay in a reasonably priced, beautiful hotel in one of the nicest areas of San Fran? Also, very quiet. Lots of kids stay here, but I didn't hear them. Free parking, free breakfast, free WiFi. This hotel made visiting San Fran affordable!

We chose this place for our 3 night stay in SF. It's in the Marina district which has plenty of restaurants nearby (if you like fish you must try Pacific Catch on Chestnut Street) as well as the Crookedest Street and Palace of Fine Arts within walking distance. In fact, everything is within walking distance if you're able and willing - the start of Fishermans Wharf and the beach area are about 25 mins away and Alcatraz Landing about an hour. It sounds a lot but on a nice day, it doesn't feel far at all.
The hotel itself is bright, friendly and quirky. The free parking is a huge bonus but beware that if you park in the overflow car park you might get blocked in. Our room was large and modern and very comfortable. Flat screen tv, safe, water (extra charge), sofa and lots of space for suitcases. The bathroom could do with a bit of TLC as some of the plastic on the toilet seat was peeling. Also we didn't have a towel rail which was annoying as we had to hang towels over the door to dry. Having one of the two mirrors in the bathroom, moved to the bedroom would be helpful too so that it can be used whilst the shower is busy. Agree with previous comments about the toasters as these are pretty slow! But a free breakfast is appreciated. All in all a very nice stay and I would happily book to stay here again.

Room Tip: If you plan to nap during the day or even go to bed before 10pm, ask for a room on the highest floor...
