“Retro, funky rooms.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2010

The decor in the hotel is 70s retro and funky, which is fun. Our room was on the 2nd floor and was very noisy with people wheeling their suitcases along at all hours. Also we were right next to the gym, ice maker, lift and house phone so we could hear people using them all the time. The custom burgers was great for a snack and the bar was handy as there was no fridge in the room. The on site laundry was a bonus. I had problems with my room phone and could not call an outside line, i had to ask 3 times for this to fixed before it worked which was not helpful when i was trying to organise tours etc.
If we went to San Francisco again i would stay in the Fishermans Wharf area as most of the attractions are there and this hotel is about a 20 minute taxi ride from there. There is not a lot to do around this hotel, however it is an easy walk to the trolley car stop and shops. We would recommend the bike over the bridge and ferry to Alactraz. All in all this hotel was good value for money, clean and had good sized rooms.

I stayed here with two friends at the end of May and stay was very good. Not a glamorous hotel, basic rooms/bathroom, basic swimming pool and gym but all clean and well presented. The staff at reception were friendly and helpful, ordering taxis, showing us directions and getting extra blankets for the room when required. The small bar area was nice for a quick drink but the "restaurant" is just a fast food burger place.

The main problem we found was the location. Although it is only a few blocks away from the main shopping area there were quite a lot of homeless people in the area and it can be daunting walking around at night. We were faced with someone trying to launch a big bag of bottles at us just 1 block from the hotel but other than that no major incidents.

I would recommend this hotel if you are looking for a no thrills place to stay and somewhere which is value for money.

The Best Western Americania is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. The Reception Staff are rude and unhelpful. We arrived after traveling for 18 plus hours from Australia at 2:30pm in the afternoon to be abrutly told that we had to come back at 3:00pm to check in because there were no rooms ready for guests, although the couple before us who were on the same flight had no problems in checking in half an hour early. When we went back to check-in we were informed that we had queen bed, although our booking was for a room for two adults. When I point this out to the Staff member she was abrupt and rude in her reply to us and continued in this manner during the entire check-in process. The room we final got was on the second floor facing the court yard. We found the noise level disturbing both at night and in the morning when the cleaning staff commenced work. We also experienced a number of days on leaving the room at 9:30am - 10:00 am and returning at 3:00 - 3:30 pm to find that the room had not been clean and having to wait around for this to be done. This was also my first experience of a Best Western Hotel and will also be last. The room although clean and comfortable lacked a fridge and storage space for belongings (two draws only). Sorry Best Western Americania you just didn't leave us with any found memories of you.

Dear Guests,

We thank you for having selected our hotel and for having taken the time to share your feedback on Trip Advisor.

We were shocked to hear of your comments and hope you will accept our most sincere apologies for not having offered you the service and accommodations you both deserved and expected during your recent stay with us. It must have been very frustrating to have encountered so many difficulties during what should have been a delightful San Franciscan holiday, and we are very sorry we failed to provide this for you.

I am meeting with my department heads to review the issues mentioned in your comments, and we are identifying areas of improvement so we can rectify these issues and ensure these problems do not arise again. We really appreciate you bringing these to our attention, and we are truly sorry we did not know of them while you were here with us.

We remain at your service and would like to believe we are capable of delivering great stay, and perhaps we will get the chance to truly wow you by hosting you on future weekend. Please let us know what we can do to make this right for you.

Yours sincerely,

My 22 year old daughter and I went on a 4 day holiday this week and both of us have never been to San Francisco before so we had no idea what to expect ! We booked our hotel online, pictures looked great and the rate was great.

The hotel was easy to find after taking the BART (bay area rapid transit ) from Oakland Airport, however walking down Market street to get to our hotel did instill a bit of fear and worry...the area was a little "sketchy"! Once we turned that corner on 7th and got closer to the court house it got a lot better and the hotel was so clean and well kept that feelings of anxiety were gone.
The lobby, the decor...all so cute and clean. We had to wait to check in due to our early arrival so we had lunch at the inhouse restaurant. The burgers were amazing. When we got into our room it was also cute and clean. The fitness room was right across from our room, lovely little courtyard and great swimming pool also close to our room.
We had such a great stay I would totally recommend this hotel.
Two small complaints, one which is not uncommon in hotels is the noise level...the floors were thin, not the walls, never heard a person next door to us but heard footsteps above and rolling suitcases! 2nd was they advertise a coffee machine in your room...thats not the case...its a kettle with instant coffee. That too saddened me since I am a coffee lover and instant does not suffice. All and all minor complaints!

Had read a few bad reviews of this place. But glad we went. Union Square quick ride by trm/bus- Hotel location was interesting. And we got to meet locals on our way to and from public transport. Forced us to explore the neighbourhood in way that we would have missed on if we had simply gone for the "main tourist stream" options in union square. Hotel room was quiet and funky. Rooms clean, furniture in good condition. Custom Bar and Custom Diner were excellent. Big Plusses - quiet room, friendly staff, laundromat on site, free internet. All you need to for a great stay. Yes, there are a lot of homeless people around. If you want to dig a little deeper you may find that your own perceptions are challenged. Isn't that the mark of a good holiday, maybe a life-changing holiday?

Very pleasant, convenient, safe, with a great staff! Good location for visiting SF: Only about a block to the F Trolley that goes down to fisherman's wharf. The Gray Line tours have a pickup point here, which was helpful.

The internet worked perfectly.
