This is an easy walk from the California Academy of Sciences, and worth an hour or two if you like conservatories.

When went here on a whim and spent an hour or so admiring the tropical plants. It's small but there are benches here and there so you can sit and look at the plants and, if it is chilly outside, warm up.

We didn't visit the butterfly room- we'd just come from the CA Academy of Sciences- but got to see some flowering orchids, a flowering hibiscus or two and lots of other tropical plants, including looking at all the plants in that little tropical food plant alcove.

If you like old conservatories and/or some tropical plants this is a good place to spend some time.

There is a bathroom outside the conservatory, to the right as you exit.

Great for green thumbs or butterfly lovers. Nice destination if your older parent doesn't like to walk too much. Get a cab from the science academy and then it's not a bad walk back there. It may be possible to get a cab to come out front. I think the entire park should accommodate the physically challenged better. Call ahead and see what they can do for you. The gal at the science museum had nothing for us as far as transportation. If you have an older parent, plan on one designated driver not going in, and circling in a car, because there is no lot for this or the other gardens.

Pros: Some nice plants including tons of huge pitcher plants, orchids, and some water lilies. It also has a cute butterfly house.

Cons: Small and expensive for what you get to see. The pathways are very narrow making it hard to stop for pictures with people behind you.

This is a smallish conservatory, so plan for a 1-2 hour visit. We loved the dahlias outside and took a ton of photographs of them. Inside it is like a tropical rainforest. There are several rooms to wander through; but, our favorite was the butterfly room. It is really warm in there which is great since San Francisco is pretty cool year round. We spent a long time in this room taking pictures of the butterfly's. they were landing on people and they e en had a covered exhibit where you could watch some coming out of their cocoons! It was really neat. They do have a pressed penny machine here if you collect them as we do. There was also a small gift shop. Overall it is a lovely place to visit and it is in Golden Gate Park which has plenty of other things to see and do.

The facility is actually very small and it doesn't take long to walk through. It is packed with trees, plants & flowers. The aisles are very narrow, so if it's busy, you will be elbow to elbow with others, and it's hard to get around. It is kept very hot & humid for the plants (a warning to all frizzy hair girls). There are no restrooms and you cannot take in a stroller. They do have some very pretty flowers & orchids, but you could enjoy all of the other flowers around the city, on the grounds of the Conservatory, or the hydrangea on Lombard St and save the $7 entrance fee. The only saving grace was the special Butterfly exhibit they are having through October. Had it not been for this exhibit, I'd have given the Conservatory a 1 star rating.
If you are a true flower lover or a photographer, this is the place for you.
