What a surprise. I've stayed at downtown hotels (Union Square) for business, spending hundreds each night. The rate here was totally reasonable, and location can't be beat. The desk folks let us check in at 10:30 a.m. (due to an early flight from the East Coast) and were very friendly and accommodating. The room was on the small side but perfectly adequate. Though it's an historic hotel, all bathroom fixtures were modern. The bar was very welcoming, with a great bartender. All staff were helpful in helping us figure out how to negotiate the city via public transportation. The only downside was paying $29 a day for parking, but tha't par for S.F. Wish the hotel had been able to negotiate a discount. All in all, a terrific, affordable, friendly place to stay!

Fantastic little hotel with an old world and homely feel. The hotel has obvioulsy been refurbished recently and the decor has been well chosen, it was nice to have a hotel with a bit of character rather than a sterile chain hotel. Our room was very comfortable and spotless, we also appreciated the large safe so we could fit laptops etc in our room, rather than putting them in a hotel safe.

The location can't be beat, great restaurants and shopping right at your front door. The cable car also stops right outside and takes you directly to Fisherman's Wharf.

The price was very reasonable as well, we got a deal for $95US a night which I was very happy with. We also stayed over New Years and were pleased with the hotel security, each guest was given a wrist band and you weren't admitted to the hotel without it.

I stayed for 4 days whilst at a conference at the Westin Union Square. This hotel was great and really good value. It is small and private and homely rather than ultra modern. My room was medium sized but large enough with a nice desk and tele and large walk-in closet and good sized bathroom with full bath. The bed was large and comfortable and there was a great pillow menu. being at teh back my room was quiet. There is no aircion but there is a ceiling fan. There is no tea/coffee making facilities in the room but they provide free tea/coffee/biscuits/apples in the reception bar all day - this was fantastic as instead of having meetings standing in the very busy lobby of the Westin I could invite guests to come and meet with me at the lovely quiet small lobby of the Chancellor. Internet is also free at this hotel. They are happy for you to order food to eat in your room from nearby cafes - so when I arrived late on a saturday night I had a nice delivery pizza. There is a small restaurant in the hotel that offers good value simple meals (sandwiches etc). Good value cocktails during happy hour (5pm - 7.30pm). All the staff were very helpful. There is a shuttle bus to the airport for $14.

A very nice home-from-home stay with great service, great value for money and a great location right on Powell Street on Union Square. Why pay more at flash chains when this little gem offers so much!!

The hotel is in a great location right next to the tram line and walking distance to all the shopping in downtown San Francisco. The room was small and the bathroom very small. Parking is very expensive an add on cost that we didn't need. Every other hotel even 'budget' hotels have provided free parking. So it would only be worth staying here if you don't have a car.

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the years. It is not very large, but has a very comfortable atmosphere, is clean and in a great location right next to Union Square. Service by all staff members is superb, even if you have unusual requests. This is my regular place to stay in SF, even though I stay at four star hotels elsewhere.

Stayed here for 4 nights after completing our California Coastal Road Trip. We arrived at 1500 hours but only 1 room out of 4 ready however they let us leave our baggage and we helped ourselves to their free tea/coffee and fresh cookies which is available 24 hrs a day from the bar/reception area. Our rooms were ready within 30 mins so not a major problem and the porter took our bags up for us. We were all allocated rooms on the 9th floor so heard no traffic noise at all for such a central spot. Room was not huge but adequate, very clean and freshly decorated. Bathroom was very small but was clean with great shower with plenty hot water and toiletries/towels provided. Bed was extremely comfortable with a choice of pillows offered to order. Complimentary bottle of wine given in room and jar of sweeties too. The concierge Susan was very helpful in organising sightseeing trips and shuttle bus for us to the Airport at a very good price. After wondering around SF this hotel was definately in the best location in a very safe neighbourhood overlooking Union Square. Exceptional quality for the price paid (GBP 80 per night) considering how good the hotel was. Far better choice of restaurants and close to shops and nicer area than Fishermans Wharf which is noisy and very touristy and not where I would choose to stay. Would recommend the Chancellor to anyone either business traveller or tourist alike.

Stayed at the Chancellor for nine days 4/13th December. What more can I say fantastic,
great staff, great location, great little bar with great Happy Hour, room and bathroom a little on the small size but very comfortable and clean, even got used of the street noises in night. Overall a very pleasant hotel to stay at.
