“A clasic hotel worth your visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2013

This is a charming hotel build in 1914 which still retains its character and charm. The rooms are small by modern standards and the bathrooms are in need of renovation but this perhaps is a reflection of the long history of the hotel and so are not necessarily negatives. There is no air conditioning but there are ceiling fans and the outside windows can be opened (though street noise can be a factor with an open window). The staff were very nice and helpful. There is a small cafe which serves breakfast and lunch which we enjoyed. There is also a small kiosk in the foyer that will help you plan day trips etc. The location is good with multiple transport options near by including the cable car which stops almost right out the front that takes you to Fisherman's Wharf. We will stay there again if we get back to San Francisco :)

Room Tip: If air-con is a "must have" for you then ask the hotel about some of the newer rooms. Howe...

Stayed here for 7 nights with my wife and young son in early October. This is an old hotel make no mistake but it's well managed and well maintained. Personally I thought the old school vibe added to its charm. Yes the rooms are not the biggest out there but the massive walk-in wardrobe lets you put all your clutter out the way. It's also not in the quietest corner of 'Frisco but I didn't mind the noises of the city bustling outside. I was able to phase the noise out after a couple of nights anyway but if you're a light sleeper ask for a room as high as possible and NOT overlooking the square. The upside is that the Chancellor's location is hard to beat - right next to Union Square (so lots of shopping, foodie heaven, transport links) and the cable car stops right on your doorstep. Some people have commented on how hot the rooms are because there's no air con. We didn't really think this would be a problem because we thought the fan would be enough, but we must admit it was pretty ineffective. It wasn't a deal breaker for us, but if you don't like heat you may want to reconsider. All the plus points (like the location and the price - don't get me wrong it's not cheap, but for San Francisco the Chancellor is one of the best value for money hotels you're going to get) outweighed this one negative. Other good points I have to mention are the management who helped arrange our room before we came and sorted out a complication efficiently and promptly once we alerted them to it after we left, and the tour desk who were very knowledgeable. Luques restaurant did great breakfasts and Sear's Fine Dining (must try) was next door. All in all a great trip.

The Chancellor is an excellent hotel located in downtown SF, walking distance to most places, and a short trolley or cab ride to the Wharf...

The hotel is well staffed, excellent staff, and has a nice coffee shop/restaurant located in it..

The rooms are small, as most in SF, but have everything you need...

Highly Recommend!

Room Tip: Higher up..

My friend and I stayed at the hotel because the location was close to the events for the Nike Women's Marathon. This was a perfect place to stay. It was central to all the sites in San Francisco and right off the trolley line to quickly get to other locations. The pillow top beds were a nice place to rest, especially when preparing for a race. The room was very clean. The staff was friendly, check in seamless, and the free cookies were a bonus. What I appreciated the most were the blackout curtains. They really worked. I read other reviews that complained about noise. We had a room that faced the middle of the hotel and had no issues with noise. We ate once in the hotel cafe. It was average, but did the job. I would stay here again next time I needed to be near Union Square.

Great location for visitors. Felt safe even at night. Cable car runs past hotel. Hotel is old but well kept. Is a very good value considering area. Stayed at another hotel in area that cost more but nowhere near the value. Have to be aware of some elevators in older hotels but there were two that operated fine here. Friendly staff. Would stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms off street side should be quieter.

Not sure how one arrives at an overall rating of 3 dots when, of the 6 individual categories, 4 are rated as 5 dots and 2 are rated as 4 dots. Not to mention using words like "Great location" and
"very good value"

The best part is the validation that other hotels in the area cost more and are nowhere near the value we offer.

Hope the poster reads this and does the right thing.

We simply loved this charming place. Great staff, small but comfortable rooms and a fantastic cityscape to gaze at.
All of the time we were in the room and awake we had the window open to let the atmosphere of this beguiling city leak in.
Of all the hotels we've stayed in in San Francisco this is our favourite, hard to put a finger on exactly why as it was the experience as a whole.
Rather stupidly we left some things in the room and only noticed when we unpacked back in the UK. One phone call and the fantastic Housekeeper sorted it. Now that's classy service!
Highly recommended, we'll definately be back. We just wish it could be sooner.

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the front. Looking down on Powell Street as the cable cars rumble up and down t...

Thank you very much! We don't get enough recognition for our lost and found department that our housekeeping manger administers. She is great about getting things back to people and our room cleaning staff have turned in thousands in cash, jewelry and other valuables that they have found left in the rooms. I am proud of what they do.

Thanks again!

After recovering from the sticker shock of hotel rates when we began planning our trip to San Francisco for the Nike Women's Marathon, we chose the Chancellor Hotel for a few reasons. Recent reviews had all been favorable, the location was perfect as the race started at Union Square (in fact, one of the starting corrals was directly in front of the hotel) and the price was reasonable (at least by our standards). I am pleased to say we were not disappointed with our choice and the hotel exceeded our expectations on many levels.

First of all, BART decided to strike the day we arrived. We had a harrowing cab ride from the airport. From the minute we entered the lobby, we were greeted by the friendly staff and were able to check in right away (even though we arrived right around 12:30). I don't remember the name of the desk clerk, but she took her time finding us a quiet room on a high floor. We were put in room 1007 and it was perfect. It was on the back side of the building and in the evenings, the window was closed and we did not have much noise.

The room is small, but we knew this going in and were not surprised. Still, we were able to move around comfortably without tripping over our things (although for this trip we didn't have many bags). We found the bed to be comfortable and, although we didn't use it, the hotel offers a "Pillow Menu" which had more types of pillows than I ever knew existed! Hot water was plentiful and water pressure was decent. The shower head was a little low, so a tall person might have trouble in the shower. The bath tub was deep and perfect for soaking after the race. The hotel provides some nicer shampoo, conditioner and bath salts. We also had a mini refrigerator in our room. This was really nice as we were able to go to the Walgreens on the corner and get water and soda to keep cold.

The lobby always had complimentary coffee (and I believe there was tea) as well as apples and cookies. We did notice they also had popcorn at happy hour. We did not try the restaurant or bar.

If we were to come back to SF and need to stay downtown, I would not hesitate to stay at the Chancellor.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor at the back of the building
