Rooms are small but beds are comfortable. The hotel is next to famous Sears restaurant for breakfast and lunch...and a few steps to a corner of union square. It is also on the Powell cable car line if you want to head over to the Wharf.

Booked a Queen Bed Non Smoking Room through Expedia at this hotel for a couple of nights.

On arrival at the hotel the Check-in was quick and efficient and there were complimentary apples and cookies on/near reception which was a nice touch.

We actually found the room to be a decent size, yes as others have mentioned the room by American standards maybe on the small side, however, there was a walk-in cupboard and large bathroom.

The room was spotlessly clean and bed comfortable. There were a number of little things that made the stay feel special, examples included a jar of sweets in the room, pillow menus and umbrellas in the rooms for guests use (it was raining for a day while we stayed)

Now the reason I mention Expedia earlier in the review is the view from the room was quite possibly the worst view we have ever had in a hotel. The window of our room faced a brick wall and overlooked the fire escape and the hotel's interior courtyard. We received no warning of this when making the booking and I have no idea whether this is down to Expedia or the hotel (No doubt Tyler the general manager who comments on reviews regularly will clarify this!). As we were using the hotel as a base to explore San Francisco and did not spend much time in the room it did not bother us ultimately, but when making a booking you may wish to check. On a positive note the side effect of facing a brick wall was that the room was quiet.
As others have said the location of the hotel was excellent with historic tram lines right outside.

Overall we had a very good stay and if we returned to San Francisco would stay here again. I would also have no hesitation in recommending the hotel to family and friends.

4 star Hotel in a 5 star location masquerading as a 3 star. We absolutely loved this charming hotel. For starters, the hotel is well over 100 years old so the rooms are small & a little quirky with the bathroom floor a few inches higher than the rest of the room BUT that just adds to the cache. Elevators are tiny but cozy with lots of polished brass. Very tasteful decor, bed to die for, windows that really open and let that wonderful fresh air in, and a pillow menu with 18 (i think) choices. Very quiet rooms - we stayed 3 nights and heard nothing - no plumbing noise, no doors slamming, no footsteps overhead - nothing! A thoughful little candy dish on a classy silver bar tray. A bath tub deep enough to float in! Great front desk staff, an in-house tour consultant, fresh cookies and wonderful coffee every morning or a full breakfast that's as good as any I've had. Unbelievablely great location right on Powell St ½ block from Union Square on a cable car line. This was our first trip to SF and this little gem helped make our stay that much better.

Room Tip: West side is great afternoon sun but not much veiw other than the alley. East side faces Powell str...

Great stay in The City! Have stayed many other places in the past. Was pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price. Stayed on tenth floor away from Powell and it was very quiet. Although the weather was warm for SF we did not have a problem with the room temperature.

The Chancellor Hotel is located just off of Union Square, on the Powell - Hyde Street cable car line. Easy to get to AT&T ballpark on the Muni line as well. Nice shops nearby. Dollar car rental return 3 blocks away was a bonus. Nice room, loved the bathroom. Staff was helpful and friendly. Great location and value.

The Chancellor Hotel is just a few steps from Union Square and very handy (about a 5 min) walk from the Powell Street Station where you can access BART to/from the airport. Whilst there are very many places where you can buy a great breakfast the one offered by the hotel is relatively good value and met our needs. Staff throughout the hotel are friendly and helpful.

Our room was more than adequate with the usual amenities you would expect to see. In terms of noise we actually quite liked the sax from a busker drifting on the air as we dozed..... it was about 10pm at the time.

The hotel had quite of few European guests (it was August).

There are a couple of neat things going on.... in addition to the often seen free coffee and water in the lobby there were also free cookies and popcorn.

The hotel bar is relatively small but adequate - being so close to the centre of things you wouldn't expect a very large bar anyhow. In terms of sense of place....well the cable car runs right outside the front door.

The only downside has nothing to do directly with the hotel. On the streets outside there are quite a few homeless people who exert their presence much more than the ones in New York we were a few days previously. It is perhaps a nod to the city's recent heritage that an often seen sign being held by such people was 'Need cash for weed'.

Happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: Get one at the back, quieter

Love the location of this hotel - so central - surrounded by good shopping and great food locations.

Very pleasant rooms , though only fans and no air conditioning, so if heat is a problem you need to ask for rooms on the cooler side of the building. My friend's room was so hot she couldn't sleep but with a change to the cooler side, she had no more problems.

Delightful place to stay, overall, with very helpful staff.
