“Best Hotel in San Francisco”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

Position, position, position.
Three words to describe this great, old hotel.
The service was excellent as was the advice from the staff.
Being right on Union Square and with transport options galore, this place has got it.
Plenty of great restaurants in the area meant not having to go too far to find a meal.
The shopping was first class and even my wife found it daunting trying to see all of the shopping in such a short time.
On our last night in San Francisco we went to see the San Francisco Giants take on the San Diego Padres in a very long Baseball game, it finished at 11.45pm. Transport was no problem as we simply walked out of the AT&T Park and straight onto a train back to the Powell Street Station. With only a leisurely 5 minute walk back up the street to our hotel, we were in bed in no time.
We stayed three nights, but I wish we had stayed longer. As Tony Bennet sang, "I left my heart, in San Francisco".

Room Tip: The rooms on Powell street can be a little bit noisy if you have your window open, but for the shear...

Stay here! Small and old but clean and well run. Restaurant is great and you can walk to Chinatown in two minutes. Great shopping nearby. Good views from upper floors and very professional friendly staff.

I had heard so many excellent things about this hotel and wanted it to be so much more than it was. In honesty I was quite disappointed.

When we arrived at the hotel, it was 2pm and we were a little early for check in. The girl who checked us in was not very friendly or welcoming and advised us to leave the bags with the Bellman. We did so and went to buy refreshments. On returning to the hotel, she was chatting on the phone and it didn't sound like a work call. She ignored us so we assumed the room wasn't ready yet. I asked another girl on check in who was much more friendly and told us that the room was ready! Not a great start but one person might not be representative of the whole staff but it wasn't a good first impression.

The room was small but big enough for us, the decor was nice and we had a great walk in closet which was invaluable for storing our cases.
We needed more towels so I used the app I had downloaded to request more. Loved the app, definitely worth getting and it worked really well.
Housekeeping did a great job of cleaning the room and our sweet jar topped up. They were always friendly too.
We hadn't been in the room long when a bottle of wine arrived as we were staying more than four nights and there was an offer on. It had a card congratulating us on our honeymoon (it wasn't, it was our two year anniversary!) but it was a nice gesture.
We did find it to be quite warm even with the window fully open and this meant it could also be quite noisy even at 4am. I did like listening to the trumpet (I think) player and the cable cars though.

The location was excellent, everything was nearby and the Muni was easy to use.

I know the manager of this hotel really does want the best experience for his guests but sadly, we didn't quite get it. There were some really lovely staff, the young man with the piercings was very friendly and chatty, but the first impressions really stuck with me I'm afraid and when we checked out (although it was 3.30am!) we weren't even asked about our stay. There are a lot of positives but sometimes the negatives make the greatest impact and that welcome and goodbye is a big one for me.

I am very sorry we disappointed in our customer service. As mentioned, we do strive to provide exceptional service to all of our guests. However, when we lose our focus, we appreciate being advised. Rest assured, we will be looking into the situations described and this review will be used as a tool to help us stay on track.

The comments regarding service are right on and while I am not happy we dropped the ball, I am pleased that they rated the rooms, location and cleanliness excellent.

Thank you.

We chose this hotel as it was near Union Square, with good transport close by. We were not disappointed, a very nice hotel close to Cable car, buses and BART. The building is old so expect a smaller than your average USA bedroom with everything in there. Coffee, water, apples and cookies available all day - great after a days sight seeing! Every question we had was answered quickly and efficiently helping us cancel a booking, get our boarding passes and more. Staff were happy to help at all times, always with a cheery welcome. Rooms were clean and serviced well daily. There is no air conditioning but California does not seem to need it we managed in August, a ceiling fan is more than adequate. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel for a stay In San Francisco. Plus it is so close to Macys. There is also a good Walgreens down the street if you want to grab a snack rather than a big meal.

Room Tip: Small rooms, some can be noisy on the front as cable car goes by, but you get to watch the world go...

Green Features: First hotel where they leave you a bag for recycling - nice to see

I was a bit apprehensive about booking a hotel room with no air conditioning, but I'm glad I took a chance! Checked into the hotel on a Tuesday, room was available when we arrived at 11:00am. Hotel is very clean and has a great feel. The staff was very attentive. The rooms were nicely appointed and well kept. We stayed on the 9th floor and had a great view of Powell Street and Union Square. The window opened and provided a nice cool breeze that flowed into the room. The room also had a ceiling fan and a small refrigerator. It can be a bit noisy for light sleepers, but its nothing that a pair of earplugs wouldn't kill. The hotel also has a selection of 12 different pillow options and white-noise machines for guest to use free of charge. Fresh apples, fresh baked cookies and iced water are available in the lobby 24 hours a day. The bar makes some great drinks and has a happy hour. There is a 24 hour Walgreens next door for anything that you may have forgotten to pack. There is a cable car stop on the same block so public transportation is nearly almost always available. San Francisco is a great city with lots of hills.

Green Features: The hotel does offer options for reusing sheets and towels.

Amazing hotel, we loved the decor of the room. Staff are incredibly kind and accommodating. We enjoyed the happy hour cocktails too. Location is ideal. A great place to stay. We stayed on the 15th floor, incredible lack of noise from the street below too.

We stayed here during our honeymoon trip and my husband booked romance package.
Room had very romantic decoration, two bathrooms and super-soft bed.
We loved the overall atmosphere in this hotel that we decided to add two more nights. We were told that hotel is fully booked for the weekend but if we can wait until 14 o'clock of the original check out day they will see if we can still keep our room - and yes we could, hotel manager was also so kind to keep the same rate.
Girls at reception were really nice, they gave us some good suggestions for breakfast and dining.
