“Service, Location, Comfort All Great”

Value is way up there. One of the best locations available at a reasonable price. The Staff are all personable, and helpful, from the front desk to the back of the house employees that you encounter in hallways and elevators. They were all genuine and much happier than some staff i have encountered in much more expensive establishments. Has the charm and character of an older hotel that is well maintained. Would recommend to anyone. Tip don't go across the street to the TACKY Place with Beefeaters outside unless you enjoy 100 tacky as an art form, terrible service and the stench. The stench is what after 30 years in the hospitality industry i recognize as the result of low house keeping standards and poorly maintained veneration system.

This was our third time at the Chancellor which just shows we do like the place. The location is great, just off Union Square and within walking distance of almost anywhere you want to go. It can be a bit noisy with the cable cars and the buskers outside but they do not go on too late and if anything add to the atmosphere. The hotel itself is quite old, the lifts are a bit slow and the rooms are a bit on the small side but very comfortable. The whole place has a slightly quirky atmosphere which may not be to everyone's liking but to us is a bonus, not a negative. If you want a good value hotel in a great location that is a bit different to the run of the mill modern stuff, stay here - you will not be disappointed. (We're sure they don't mind you adopting the occasional duck either!!).

Room Tip: Ask for a rear facing room if you really don't like the city sounds but don't complain about...

Excellent staff and good breakfast. Try the corned beef hash! Rooms are not huge but more than adequate and comfortable. Wi-Fi can get a bit overloaded but works well when you are connected. Location is obviously superb as nearly everywhere is either an easy walk or on nearby public transport. If you prefer the more traditional style of hotel, this is definitely one to look at.

Room Tip: Upper floors will be quieter particularly if you at the front of the hotel.

I chose the Chancellor after reading through the many positive reviews here on TripAdvisor - and I was not disappointed.

The location cannot be beat - on Powell Street (right outside of a cable car stop) and within walking distance of many stores and restaurants.

The hotel itself is very charming and the staff is incredibly helpful. Susan at the Tour Desk helped me to plan several outings and patiently explained the public transportation system to me. Mao, the waiter at the hotel restaurant Luques, was attentive and friendly.

My room was cozy, clean, tastefully decorated and quiet (located in the back corner of the hotel). It had a mini fridge which came in useful, as my stay was for 4 nights. The bathroom was about the same size as my one back home, so I didn't have an issue with it at all. I also found the shower water pressure to be great, despite reading other reviews stating the contrary. The lack of AC was not a problem because the temperature was comfortable in/out of the room.

The Chancellor differentiates itself from larger hotel chains via the small things - like a pillow menu; free apples, coffee/tea, homemade cookies (day) and fresh popcorn (night) in the lobby; candy jar in the room. And, of course, the great staff...

After coming in from the hustle and bustle of downtown, the Chancellor truly was an oasis.

I would definitely return to the Chancellor and would highly recommend it for other travelers.

Room Tip: Powell Street can get somewhat loud due to city noise and the musicians - so if you're a light s...

We upgraded to a suite on the 14th floor - very nice! Two bathrooms, two TVs. Happy hour and nice little restaurant too. Cable car stops right outside. Highly recommend this place, the location is excellent for shops and restaurants.

I recently stayed at the Chancellor hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful -- I requested a room change because I found the room facing onto Powell (with views of Union Square, etc.) to be quite noisy with cable cars dinging, etc. They moved me right away, and made all efforts during my stay to ensure I was looked after. The hotel is dated, but pretty clean and a great price for the location -- it's very central, close to many shops and the Powell BART station. Super convenient. Tip: if you book directly through the Chancellor (on web/phone) you will get a booking "bonus" -- for me it was a $20 gift card for the hotel restaurant, and I used it for breakfast.

Room Tip: If you want a quiet spot, be sure to ask for a room that doesn't face a main street (like Powell...

Stayed for four nights at this hotel with a group of people and all of us were very happy....the staff at this hotel is superior to any I have stayed. Incredibly friendly and helpful. We requested for the group to be all on the same floor and surprise, we were. My experience at other hotels is that they assign the rooms once you get there but the Chancellor had us all together on the 14th floor. Everyone in our group were happy with the rooms, the cleanliness and the location is the absolute best! There is a small fridge in each room which was great for that bottle of wine we got on our wine tour and the bed was incredibly comfortable.
I would not hesitate to stay here again. Great job Chancellor Hotel!!
