“Good Location and friendly”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

We stayed at the hotel as a result of checking tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. If you were being super critical then the worst you could say is the hotel is probably a little tired in its decor and feel. Having said that, it was spotlessly clean and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the location cannot be beaten. There is complimentary tea, coffee, iced water and cookies in reception all day, the bar is friendly and not too expensive for a hotel.
Next door is Sears, a diner ideal for breakfast and an experience. Go early because from 9am ish they queue outside for a table. The hotel restaurant provided a limited range for breakfast as well that was more than adequate as was the room service.

A 3 day pass for public transport, trams and cable cars cost $21 each and was worthwhile.

If you want an alternative to an open topped bus try Gocars. They are 3 wheeled petrol driven two seater vehicles that provide GPS trips around town with a commentary - a complete hoot and very safe.

The location of the hotel is such that you can walk to quite a few attractions feeling quite safe as you do so. Like all cities San Francisco has its less desirable areas so I would check with hotel staff if you have any concerns - learn where the tenderloin area is and avoid it!

Would we stay at the Chancellor again - certainly! Would we recomend it to friends - certainly!

Room Tip: Go high to avoid city noise if it bothers you

My husband and I recently travelled to San Francisco and stayed at the Chancellor Hotel. It was our first stop on our trip and after a very long flight from Sydney, it was great to have such a lovely hotel to arrive at. The service staff were friendly and very helpful and the room was lovely. We had our own private bathroom and walk in robe. Very spacious room and very clean. The location is awesome, its right in Union Square, close to all the shops, lovely bars and restaurants. We highly recommend this hotel and if we are lucky enough to travel back to the USA we would stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street have a view of course - but you are in San Fran - you shouldnt be in your ro...

We stay here every time we go to SF. You can beat the location and the price. Yes the rooms are small(but 6 of us would meet in one room for drinks), no a/c and no coffee machines on room but always available in the lobby. Staff is helpful. In short stay here.

We took the BART from San Francisco airport to the Powell St. Bart Station and walked 4 blocks to the Chancellor - stayed 4 nights
Outside is quite quaint but elegant, inside the lobby very nice with large couch, and some antique chairs, table with ice water with lemon and a tray of cookies (all the time) - a nice extra treat. Free coffee x 24 hrs.

Rooms were small but very comfy beds, clean linens and huge tub which I really liked also bath salts were supplied and a rubber Ducky - cute idea.

We asked for a fridge in the room and it was delivered right away. No air conditioning but it wasn't needed in San Fran - we just ,opened the windows. Some reviews said it was noisy but we never heard much being tired from walking most of the day. Cable car was nearby but was always busy and there were line ups to get on so we walked and took taxis most of the time . Happy hour in the bar was great with great service. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Have the eggs benedict in Luques restaurant on site - they were yummy. Everything is close shopping ,dining ,even China Town was in walking distance . So we were so glad we read the reviews and decided to stay at the Chancellor. We would stay there again!.

Stayed at the Chancellor for 11 days, feels like a second home.. Very comfortable and close to most attractions. Have stayed here twice before and love it..wouldn't stay anywhere else while in S.F... Nice little bar with great bar food, highly recommend the burger.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper like me I prefer a top floor away from Powell Street.

We stayed at the Chancellor for 5 nights on our first visit to San Francisco. It's tough to choose a hotel when you are unfamiliar with the city, but after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor we chose the Chancellor, and it was an excellent choice! The location is perfect....right on Powell St. with the cable car stop outside the hotel door. Four blocks to the cable car turnaround on Market and Powell. We walked to everything...stores, restaurants, movies. The staff was very helpful and courteous. It's true that the rooms are smaller than the big chain hotels, but we were so comfortable it really didn't matter. The on site restaurant was great for breakfast, and the lobby has complimentary coffee, tea, apples and cookies. We loved soaking in the oversized tub after a long day of sightseeing. Our room was on the 11th floor facing Powell St so it was a bit noisy with the windows open, but we loved falling asleep to the sound of the cable car bell as it passed our hotel. The tour desk was very helpful planning our sightseeing, buy the Muni pass as it gets you unlimited rides on cable, streetcar and buses, which we used all day to get around town. We enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend this hotel.
