The Chancellor is rather tired looking, we asked for a quiet room and were on the top floor, 15th. Our room was in need of decoration and to get into the room we had to squeeze in and out of the bathroom which was just inside the door. At 3am every morning a strange knocking noise could be heard and at 5am there was a clanging noise which may have been a water or heating system. We mentioned these noises to the management who said nothing could be done. The staff in the breakfast room were offhand and not particularly helpful. My husband had a duvet cover with a hole in it. We booked a tour through the hotel to Yosemite which, for various reasons, was very unsatisfactory. All in all it was a very disappointing stay and we couldn't really recommend this hotel.

I am very sorry these folks were disappointed. We try very hard to please everyone that stays with us, but we are what we are, and about 4% of you out there will not like us no matter what.

They asked for a quiet room and that is what they got. The top floor on the backside is what we call our quietest rooms and they are occupied almost every night without complaint. I won’t deny that our 98 year old hotel has noises, ghosts or other unusual aspects that some people may experience. But I will say that most people don't have those experiences or are they bothered by such. I don't know what "management" they spoke with, but it wasn't me. I don't know how the conversation went, but if they had told us that they were that disappointed, we would have been happy to waive any charges and help them find a hotel where they would have been happy.

Again, about 4% of you will not like us based on our 96% thumbs up rating on TripAdvisor. All I can say is do your research, read the reviews and my responses before you stay with us and let us know if you are unhappy for any reason...we can almost always do something to make things better.

Trying to find a hotel for our stay in San Francisco was a nightmare, I finally settled on the Chancellor Hotel, it was a good choice, it’s a little old fashioned and that gives it character, service was good, rooms clean. Here’s a tip, breakfast time the hotel provides coffee, tea and lovely soft cookies FOC in reception, that really helped get the day started. Location wise its right on Powell Street, walk to the bottom of the hill and you can get the tram to the piers, the tram does stop right outside the hotel, but you’ll be lucky if you can get on there with a family. Again, down the hill is Macys store with its roof top cheese cake restaurant/café which we visited twice LOL. The start of China Town is just up the hill to the right on California Street. There are a couple of eateries nearby on Powell Street, a couple of independents and two Lories Diner’s one up the hill, one down the hill, all were fine. When it came time to pick up our hire car, I’d pre arranged pick up one block away at the National garage on Bush Street. All in all it couldn’t have worked better and I’d stay at the Chancellor again without a moment hesitation.

The room was great--We were upgraded to a better room (at no charge). The rooms do not come with a fridge--but just ask! They were more then happy to get one for you. Huge bathtub and yes---there was a rubber ducky. Great value and location. A little noisy on the Union Square side. Jack hammers at 7 am sharp. :)

Room Tip: Just be advised that the beds are Very firm

Stayed here with my husband on a recent weekend getaway. It's a small place, only about six or so rooms on a floor, and the rooms are small but user-friendly and comfortable. We never had to wait more than a minute for the elevator. The people at the bar and downstairs restaurant and very accommodating and the restaurant is good value compared to other places around there. Their eggs Benedict was supposed to be the house special, but because I'm a vegetarian the waiter offered to make it Florentine and very tasty it was! The bar also has a decent happy hour.

The only drawback was our room didn't have a very good view -- maybe a room higher up (we were on the 6th floor) and/or maybe facing Union Square (but then you might have more noise). And it didn't have a fridge.

The location is superlative, half a block from Union Sq., the Powell/Hyde cable car goes right past, and a lot of great restaurants and watering holes are within walking distance. One day we walked all the way to Pier One of the Embarcadero and then along the waterfront up to the Powell/Hyde cablecar for the ride back. A long walk but lots of fun.

It was very brisk weather while we were there so we appreciated being able to duck out of the hotel and to have a choice of places to go within a three-block radius. While you're there check out the little concierge/gift stand in the lobby. Some very eclectic pieces there and some bargains -- I think the salesperson's mom collects stuff and then sells it through that place.

I'd definitely stay here again, and the price was very reasonable given the quality, amenities and location.

Room Tip: Higher floor facing Union Square would be gorgeous views.

We have had many lovely weekends in San Francisco - the Chancellor Hotel seems like home away from home. It has been said before but worth repeating....the hotel is friendly, safe, perfect location, and most of all....clean, clean, clean. Beds are comfy and for warmish evenings, the ceiling fan is quiet and efficient - keeps the room comfortable.
If you have questions...the manager is most receptive and answers promptly.
We love this hotel!!!!

Room Tip: The higher the room, the quieter it is....but for a great view - ask for a room overlooking Powell.
