I booked The Chancellor in early 2011 for my honeymoon in September. I emailed Kevin, the reservations manager, to check availability, and see whether I could book a 'special' room for the occasion. He promised he would sort it, and when we arrived we were very happy that he had given us a room with a view of Union Square, and high enough up to not be affected by the noise. A man of his word, and we were very grateful.

The hotel itself, well, we couldn't fault it. It is what it is, an old style hotel in a fantastic location, with nice staff, even the lady and gentleman in the kiosk were brilliant. Our room was clean, and plenty big enough for the two of us, and the aforementioned view was just awesome, especially at night. I have to say that it was an absolute bargain too, and I can see why it is such a popular hotel, far better than one of the stuffy 'upmarket' offerings elsewhere.

All in all, we couldn't fault a thing, I'd like to thank Kevin and all the staff for excellent service from start to finish, and for the lovely gift which was left for us. We couldn't have asked for better on our first trip to San Francisco, in fact, or first trip to the States.

I would highly recommend staying here, and I hope to return in the near future.

Room Tip: We had room 1505 which had cracking views of the Square.

We got in late in the evening. The rooms were exactly as I requested. It seemed as if they had been freshly painted, but maybe that is just because the place is so clean. The beds are quite comfortable. The downstairs restaurant is a real "plus" for breakfast in the morning. It has become a real home away from home for me, and the staff-- many of whom I now recognize after having stayed for 4 years-- thanks to TripAdvisor-- are great.

Room Tip: I recommend a high room on the back side of the hotel to avoid the noise of cable cars on Powell Str...

The Chancellor Hotel was built in the early 1900's. You wouldn't know it by the interior. This wonderfully appointed hotel is situated in a perfect location to enjoy the city. Not only that, the rooms were incredibly clean, the bell staff was more than attentive, the front desk personnel answered every question we had AND even printed out maps to the various locations we mentioned. Our bell staff person was named Matthew and he stood out in the rain on a very busy Saturday night and relentlessly attempted to hail a cab. Not an easy task under the circumstances. The complimentary coffee was a nice touch along with the apples and cookies. The hallways are narrow and the rooms are of a modest size but that is due to the age of the property which I might add was completely charming, elegant and totally perfect for our visit. This hotel has class and has been very well maintained. Our bed linens were clean and new and there were a variety of pillows to choose from including buckwheat! It was our honeymoon and the hotel staff placed 2 souvenier champagne flutes along with a bottle of pink champagne in our room before our arrival. Very nice touch. The cleanliness of the room was wonderful. We slept with the window open each and every night. The city is noisy but you can request a room up high and you can avoid the street car/city noise.
We enjoyed fine dining right next door at Sears restaurant and Starbucks was on the corner. The cable cars run right in front of the hotel and the entire city is at your feet and within walking distance.

We will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Request a higher level floor if city noise bothers you. The front desk will gladly accommodate.

We have stayed at the Chancellor several times in the last seven or so years and have returned because it is a nice hotel and a good value. I was not going to write another review but reading the absurd review by "fedeanddelsman" prompted me to do so. Nothing in that review is even remotely true. The hotel is immaculate and well maintained. The rooms are small but that should be known going in. We will stay there again the next time we are in SF--probably next year.

Room Tip: If a small room is a problem opt for an upgrade.

IT WAS HORRIBLE. We went to san francisco to have some great time and it wasnt great at all. The people where mean. One of the receptionist guys even insulted my son. If you go to that hotel you will regret. The bedrooms were not comfortable at all, they were dirty, small, a lot of noise. And the restaurant was awful. It was so horrible that I dont want to return to San Francisco ever again. You suck Chancellor Hotel on Union Square.

How can people be so angry and mean? I don't know what San Francisco did to these people, but it could not have been worse than the vitriol written here. They gave every single place in San Francisco a one dot - terrible rating when they signed up TripAdvisor on November 2, 2011.
