I get the feeling that this hotel used to be better than it is now. It was recommended by Amex as one of its 'program' hotels in San Francisco and the benefits are good - free breakfast and very good upgrade to huge suite. BUT the restaurant is awful. It is so dark that you can hardly see anything (even at breakfast) and the service is exceptionally slow. We only had dinner there one night and I had to buy my own breakfast goods as they had no gluten free or dairy free offerings at all. The room service menu is exceptionally limited for someone like me with allergies- there were only 2 items on the menu even with adjustments that I could order. I suggest Amex remove this hotel from their recommended list. The Spa is also very dark and dingy and old fashioned but very expensive. The hotel is in a good location on Nob Hill if you don't want to be right downtown.

Dear luabandit,

Gracious greetings from The Scarlet Huntington!

Thank you for your review. We are sorry that your Big 4 restaurant experience was below your expectations. We understand your frustration, however, we also wish we could have had the opportunity to find a satisfactory solution for you while you were staying with us. Please allow me to share that we do have gluten- and dairy-free options on the menu such as an array of fresh seasonal fruit, Greek yogurt, gluten-free bread, and soy milk for breakfast. We have an excellent house-cured salmon, Eggs Benedict, and other egg- and egg-white breakfast entrees that can be easily made without gluten or dairy for dining in the restaurant or in the comfort of your guestroom. The room service attendants handle these requests quite often and will recommend the restaurant menu should the room service menu be insufficient for their culinary or dietary needs.

With the lighting and ambience of the restaurant, we want to preserve a more organic lighting regimen with vintage sconces and recessed lighting which can create darker and brighter areas of the restaurant. Any feedback regarding service would be helpful to successfully address the issue and prevent lapses in the future—we strive to keep open communication with our team to highlight wins and focus on opportunities. We do appreciate your taking the time to write to us and share your observations, and welcome any further comments.

We do hope you’ll give The Scarlet Huntington another opportunity for a more positive experience.

Graciously yours

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights, July 1-3, before flying home to the East Coast after our California adventure. San Francisco was the last 2 nights on our journey. I booked the hotel through the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts program which provided for a free upgrade (if available), early check-in, late check-out, complimentary breakfast every morning for 2 and a free amenity (free car service once to the airport). When we checked in we were eagerly greeted with a hot towel and friendly service by all. We were also upgraded to a corner suite, I believe room 404, which overlooked the park and Grace Cathedral. I loved watching the park and the church; great views! The room was amazing with some of the softest beds I have ever slept in. Location is fabulous; right off the cable car line. We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful infinity pool and spa area. It was so relaxing and quiet after a long day walking around. The room was huge by any standard and had all of the amenities of home. The free car service to the airport, arranged by the concierge, was prompt, professional and enjoyable. If we are back in San Francisco, we will definitely return to this gem!

Room tip: Corner suites are huge and offer amazing views. We overlooked Huntington Park and Grace Cathedral.

This is a first-class hotel with the marble bathrooms and high-end soaps, but it is the service that sets it apart. Every employee will go out of their way to make your stay special, especially the front-desk and bell-staff. Simply wonderful.

Tip: Ask for a room in the back, facing South if you want peace and quiet. We slept facing the "inside" of the hotel, not the street and slept with the windows open. If you want the views, you can get that in by facing the Bay. They're wonderful views, but personally, sleep is more important to me.

Room tip: Sweeping Bay Views in Front. Quite Rooms in back.

Not many hotels are memorable - the Scarlet Huntington is. An historic building that retains the very best of the past and blends it with modern amenities and excellent service. A charming lobby and delightful bar and restaurant presaged a very spacious, comfortable room with a view over the city. The bathroom even had a magnifying mirror - fantastic!
All the staff were unfailingly welcoming, friendly and helpful, indicating excellent training. The concierge staff were knowledgeable and always ready with useful advice and assistance.
The location in Nob Hill could not be better, with excellent transport access.
It was always a pleasure to return to the hotel. It made our five days in San Francisco a terrific experience.
Very highly recommended.

What a fantastic stay! We had a wonderful time, were treated like royalty and have nothing but good things to say. The concierge was very helpful in making things happen for us. The restaurant (the Big 4) was excellent and the service impeccable.
