“Beautiful hotel on top of a steep hill”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013

Hotel is located on top of the hill at Nob Hill. Google said only 15 min walk from Powell Bart station to hotel, but it was all up hill. I would have taken a taxi but couldn't find one.

Check in was prompt and efficient. Jen at the front was very friendly and helpful. I was upgraded to Junior Suite. Although the view from 3rd floor was limited, the quality of the room made up for it. Jen mentioned that there was a live music that night at the bar. There was a $10 cover charge but is waived if you are a guest. We were too tired from walking up hill to make it to the show, so can't comment on the quality of the performance.

Location is fantastic. Within walking distance of Chinatown and Union Square (all down hill). It would have been nice to have a car, but the overnight parking is $60 a night. Also finding parking spots at the local attractions is very difficult.

Room Tip: join their rewards program. Although I'm a Hilton gold member and do not stay much with this hot...

We used points to spend 3 nights (mid-week) in July '13. Staff were very gracious, housekeeping was on time and thorough. Found that the skimpy robes, price of $12/day for wifi (though it was free for us with our ICG status), and insane prices at the hotel restaurant were to be expected, but off-putting all the same. It's a beautiful older building in a fantastic setting.

Room Tip: Choose 5th floor and up for a view and to avoid street noise.

The Mark Hopkins is known for spoiling their wedding anniversary guests. Daniela, the Director of Rooms, made sure we were not disappointed. We were treated to a wonderful room with a Golden Gate view on a high level floor. We did not expect to be greeted with classical music as we entered the room making it all the more memorable. Waiting for us was a sumptuous amenity of their best bubbly along with sweet strawberries and vanilla, lime, and hazelnut fondues thanks to Anna a representive of Guest Relations. The bathroom was top-notch with marble walls and floors. The soap they offer there is out of this world. We enjoyed the view and live band at the Top of the Mark. I would be remiss not to mention that the staff was friendly and courteous as they should be. Do you have an anniversary coming? Well, now you know where to go.

Grand building and entrance, beautiful lobby, nicely appointed rooms, and friendly staff. Stay on 9th floor or higher to get the great view. We purchased nominal upgrade for this but it went to charity and was worth it. Have a drink or brunch at Top of the Mark! Visit the lobby and restaurants at The Fairmont across the street - our young son loved all of it.

We had the most exquisite stay at the Mark Hopkins. We were treated like royalty from the moment our cab pulled up. I've never met a friendlier hotel staff. Our room was GORGEOUS! And we had the most amazing concierge, George, who was spot on with every recommendation. I don't think we had a single day where we didn't enlist his help picking a restaurant, figuring out local transportation or renting a car. We can't wait to return!

Room Tip: We stayed in a corner room on the 7th floor. Amazing view and so spacious! Beautiful large windows!

We stayed here two times in our trip to California, first upon arrival and at the end of our trip. We paid something like 240 € or our room per night, (two adults plus one kid) which I consider expensive, so there is something to expect. No disappointments though. We hired a car via hotel, which went smoothly. The location is fine, walking distance to Chinatown, Union Square etc. (One word of caution. The hotel is located up on a hill, so careful with all that walking, especially descending.) The view from the top-floor restaurant is marvelous, the breakfast was over-priced. Take a look at the historical retrospective in the lobby, this hotel has an interesting past.
