I stayed here with my gf after her prom and everything from the luxurious rooms to the awesome service made her feel "like a princess". So if you want to be treated like royalty, I strongly suggest the Mark Hopkins

On top of Nob Hill a smart and safe part of central San Fran. The hotel is luxurious if not opulent. The rooms are a little small but large enough. If you are lucky enough to get a high floor you may have spectacular views of the city, the bay or even Golden Gate? Beds are very comfortable, bathrooms a bit dated but quite alright. Breakfast on the top floor is excellent.

Room Tip: Get a high floor with a view

My wife and I spent a great quick birthday getaway at the Mark Hopkins. From our greeting by the door man when we drove into the courtyard to the bell man who helped us out when we left, all of the staff members at the Mark were friendly, courteous and professional. Our room was very nice and had an amazing view, and having a drink at the Top of the Mark is always a treat. I've stayed at just about all the nice hotels in San Francisco and the Mark Hopkins is my favorite.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have a great view.

I enjoy staying at historical and boutique hotels and this one perfectly fit the bill in San Francisco. The room was not huge, as is typical in an older hotel.... but we loved it. Clean, great decor, huge bathroom (though I will second other reviews about the water pressure in the shower not being very strong) and an extremely comfortable king bed.

We stayed on the 17th floor and had an AMAZING view of the Golden Gate Bridge, the water and Alcatraz. We ordered food in one night just to sit by the window and enjoy the view of the sun setting! With the noted "Top of the Mark" only two floors above us we lucked out for sure! Sidenote on the Top of the Mark - I read in other reviews about it having a great cocktail list and great views but not such a great vibe, in contrast to the rest of the hotel. We found this to be true, when we tried to stop up for a nightcap around midnight. We were asked to pay the $15 per person cover (band was playing) even though there was less than a half hour left of the band. This was disappointing, especially because there is no other restaurant or bar in the hotel. The man who was at the door was also quite rude in this exchange which was even more disappointing. Setting the experience there aside, the hotel was great.

The location is very central - close by to everything you would want to do as a tourist, but I will say that you better be ready for your calves to hurt a bit after walking up and down that hill!

Overall - a definite recommendation, especially for a special trip!

Room Tip: The higher the better!

This hotel was fabulous! From the entrance which features large brass handled glass doors and bell men who are greeting each guest, to the lobby decorated in victorian style furniture offering guests a place to sit and take some really nice pics, this place was luxurious to say the least. We got a priceline deal on a room for Sunday and Monday night and chose a king size bed next to the elevator b/c we wanted the view. I never heard the elevator during our stay. The room was decorated beautiful and crystal clean with plush bedding on a large firm bed. The had water and snacks for sale in the room, and a large room service menu. The tv featured plenty of channels including HBO, showtime, and many others. There was no DVD player, but the tv did allow for one to be hooked up if you bring your own. We had a evening dinner at the Top of the Mark restaurant which had an excellent view of the city and had a very simple, but delicious appetizer type food menu. I couldn't get enough of the city views which is worth the extra hiking you do to get to the top of Nob Hill where the hotel is located. It is worth noting however the parking is $60 per day and there is a garage only one block for $40/day. We enjoyed our stay in our comfortable room at the Mark Hopkins and if you can get a decent deal at this place I would highly recommend you do. Good Luck

Room Tip: Rooms up high are better, near the elevator had a great view and was not much extra noise.

My boyfriend and I went on a weekend getaway to San Francisco. We arrived at the Mark Hopkins and was greeted warmly by the staff, assisted immediately with our luggage and checkin was fast.

Upon entering the room I was surprised by just how beautiful the room was. It was spacious and clean. The bed was extremely comfortable like sleeping on a cloud.

The only thing I would recommend next time is a room higher up to drowned out early morning taxi noise.

We found this hotel through booking.com and got a fairly good rate BUT not knowing San Francisco better before booking this hotel hurt us ...literally...during our stay. The historic hotel is located on the top of one of the highest hills in SF, making every walk back to the hotel miserable after walking all day touring the city. You will have to spend $6 per ride to take the cable car up the hills (every street around hotel is straight down) or take cabs every day and night unless you are in incredible shape physically. The only place to get food in the hotel is at the Top of the Mark, way up in elevators that take forever. We went up at night to have a cocktail and appetizer and it took forever with a very expensive and limited menu. There are many other fabulous hotels in the city for tourists with a much better location.
