In the heart of San Francisco. On top of Nob Hill. Went for the San Francisco marathon. Desk personnel were great and informative. Very clean and inviting. Loved it !!!! This hotel is within walking distance (20 minutes) to the marathon start. It is also a short walk to fisherman's wharf and many other attractions in the city.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights.

Our first impression was the receptionist who was rude and everything was an issue to help us with. Not a good first impression for such a famous historical hotel.

The rooms were large and the bed was very comfortable.

The hotel is on the top of the hill and therefore has a lovely view if you stay for new years for the fireworks. But staying on top of the hill is also VERY tiring as you need to wait for a tram or walk up the hill. All the shops are down the hill. China town is just a short walk away and it really does feel like China.

Hiring a car is inexpensive but the parking is US$54 per day (including TAX) and you cant park on the street as there is no parking available.

Room Tip: ??No idea the receptionist was not very helpful

I had the pleasure of spending 13 nights in a one bedroom suite in January and December. As well as in a terrace suite Thanksgiving weekend. This property has a lot of charm and history. It is conveniently located near Chinatown, Union Square and the financial district. Great restaurants and shopping in walking distance. The rooms are nicely decorated in a traditional manor. The views are spectacular. Room service is pricey but very good food. If I need to be in SF, the Mark Hopkins is where I will stay.

Room Tip: Parking is expensive. If you have to drive, there is a parking lot a half block west on California a...

My wife and I have been vacationing in San Francisco since 1962. Each year for the last dozen years, we have been staying at the Mark Hopkins Hotel. We recommend you do also. if you do you will finds this is a hotel that gives you a warm welcome feeling upon arrival. The lobby is not over powering and does not present a "wow" factor. It is large enough in human scale to make you feel very comfortable. Coming here so often we have noticed that we see the same staff and employees at the door, check-in desk and cosigner desk, especially the cosigner desk. The two gentleman, Dan & George are always most helpful and seem to anticipate your needs. You would do well to let them help you.

I am sure there are all sizes of rooms in the hotel. We request a corner room. very nice. your will also find the rooms well appointed. They too give a welcome feeling. I am sure other competitive hotel do have rooms that you would call "very contemporary ". You will finds the rooms here very clean to start with. The beds and bed linings are wonderful. The baths are quite adequate, all marble and tile. It has been our experience that room service is lightening quick and courteous. It seems they now have flat screen TV's...and new room coffee service. We liked the old room service better! coffee. We have never given much thought to night turn-down service until now. It seems the mark Hopkins has taken night turn-down service to a new level. I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to return from a night out and find your room and bath nicely refreshed, clean towels room straighten and etc.

The location atop Nob Hill is a much less hectic place and traffic noise is hardly noticeable. The cable cars passing do make their presence known. I believe the hotel also provides a courtesy car from time to time. We have used it in the evenings....very nice touch.

It is our experience the Mark Hopkins offer a very good value, superior service and a welcome and a delightful travel experience. Not to forget about "Top of the Mark" bar, it is always a welcome sight to look out over the city from this vantage point. Think of Mark Hopkins Hotel as a boutique hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room!

Opened in 1926 and steeped in history the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins provides another element to a visit to San Francisco that I didnt seeor get anywhere else.

It is not pretentious and compared to the modern elite 5 stars hotels it is not that luxurious but this hotel offers charm and character. It also has the best view of San Francisco that I witnessed.

I stayed in a deluxe corner room which was very spacious and sympathetically decorated.

The Hotel is centrally located, being close to China Town, Union Square, little italy and fishermans wharf is a 20 minute walk.

A must is an evening drink at 'Top of the Mark' which has 100 (i think) different Martinis and great views.

The only downsides are that if your driving, parking is nearly €50.00 per day including tax and the only bar is at the Top of the Mark so when its busy be prepared to wait upto an hour for Drink!

Room Tip: The upper floors are best for views (obviously).

Beautifully presented hotel with some incredible views. Room was furnished in a continental style with the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in! The only disappointment was the famous bar, which clearly saw its glory days before it was remodelled to a current look. But would definitely stay again.

The Intercontinental Mark Hopkins a beautiful hotel in San Fran.... let me start off by saying I would go back.
In the website write-up of the hotel it explains how it opened in 1926, and describes itself as the finest historic San Francisco luxury hotels. I have to say I felt like I was taken back in time, all in a good way. It is ideally located at the crossing of three cable car lines, minutes from Union Square. View from our room were awesome. The view was no question breath-taking from the Top of the Mark restaurant above... wow, a "must go" spot in the evening.
The room was very clean and beautiful. I had a good experience with the service.
Price: Relative to the prices in the city I feel it was good for what we were getting. Again, comparing prices within this city. (i.e. don't compare to Great Falls, MT Holiday Inn prices) All prices in the city are priced higher, plain and simple.
I did the valet parking, was convenient, I like convenient when traveling.
I'm a walker so I enjoyed my trek to and from locations around the city. *** You are up on top of a hill so bring comfortable shoes for getting around. If you are a geocacher(high tech treasure hunting using a GPS) there are a number of geocaches in the area.
Also, the Cable Car Museum is really close... a must do. (you learn a lot)
I will come back to this hotel when I'm back in the city, no question about it.
