“overated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

I was expecting a grand experience based on all I heard of the Mark Hopkins. Perhaps the bar was set too high. The staff is well trained and very helpful. The bathroom was almost as large as the bedroom, which is saying more about how small the bedroom is. Lots of noise from the street. Get a room off the street. There are rooms with better views than others; make sure you get one at check in. There is a shortage of electrical outlets if you need to work at the desk. My room was dated and neither had the charm of an old hotel or the benefits of a renovated room. There are hotels with a better location. The hotel is not worth paying a premium for.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room, off the street, with a view of the bay.

We just returned from a trip to San Francisco, and a pleasant stay at the Mark Hopkins hotel on top of Nob Hill.

There is much to recommend this hotel: it is conveniently located, has spectacular views from most rooms (and especially from the Top of The Mark restaurant on the top floor), the rooms are well appointed, and the staff are uniformly friendly and helpful. All of these things make it worthwhile, but there are a few things keeping it from being great. On this visit, there were a couple of incidents that made part of our stay less than good.

The rooms are a little undersized, but this is to be expected in an older hotel. The problem is that they do not seem to have put much insulation in between the rooms. We were on an upper floor, and we could hear EVERYTHING that went on in the room next to us. Making matters worse was that a recent renovation included low water volume toilets which sound like a small jet taking off. We were awakened every time the neighbour went to the bathroom at night.

Then on our first night, at 5:30 in the morning, a loud noise that sounded like an industrial air compressor started up. Apparently we were not the only ones to complain to the front desk, and the noise discontinued about 15 minutes later. Of course, by that time, we were wide awake. The disappointing aspect of this is that no apology or explanation was forthcoming from the hotel.

On a matter that was really not the hotel's fault, there was a convention in town and it seems many of the conventioneers liked to drink far too much, and then stand in the hallway yelling at each other.

I doubt that I will stay at this hotel again. For all that there is to recommend it, I like to sleep well when I am on holiday. It seems that too little thought went into noise issues when the last round of renovations was undertaken.

Room Tip: Try getting a room away from the street side. The views are better and they may be a little quieter...

The Mark Hopkins Nob Hill was a wonderful place to stay. The hotel staff were all very friendly and accomodating. The rooms are luxurious and the location is perfect. The beds were like sleeping on a cloud.
It's in the heart of everything and we walked mostly everywhere but it is at the top of a very steep hill so if you're not fit you'll want to take a taxi which will get you to wherever you want to go in minutes.

My girlfriend and I live in San Jose and occasionally escape to the city so we have stayed in several hotels there. This was by far our best experience! We were celebrating our anniversary and they gave us a complimentary upgrade to suite with amazing views. The staff was the most friendly and helpful staff that I have experienced in San Francisco and would recommend this hotel to anyone. We used to try a new hotel every trip to the city and we will most likely stay here every time from now on!

Room Tip: deluxe room or better is worth the extra cost because the views are incredible

Stayed here for the first time during Dreamforce conference. A lovely, grand dame of a hotel but a few things. #1 We were on the fourth floor and there was a lot of street noise, including delivery trucks in the wee hours. Ask for a room on a higher floor. #2 There is no food option in the hotel other than top of the mark, which i did enjoy, but which is also fabulously expensive. Go for a drink and enjoy the view. There are some neighborhood places nearby, try the Nob Hill cafe for a cozy Italian dinner. Beware some very steep hills depending on where you walk. #3 Crazy to charge for wifi in hotel of this class. Every staff member I spoke with was very nice. Nothing wrong with this hotel, but overall, I prefer the Hotel Nikko in Union square area, for its locale, nice bar, and conveniences inlcuding a starbucks in the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for highest floor possible; street noise on 4th floor.

My wife and I stayed here a week (17-23 Sept). Even if I was a novice traveler vs the constant traveler I am, I would have still been disappointed with this stay. Cups weren't replaced, complementary room coffee wasn't replenished, and the staff couldn't be bothered. I am on the road 28 days a month, but don't have super high expectations.... I can get the happy staff, same size room, great bed, big screen TV, free Internet ( they charge $18 a day here ), a nice breakfast for 1/6th the price. These guys need to up their game, get over themselves and catch up with the times. I won't stay here again or recommend this establishment.

The hotel is pretty nice but the staff seems a bit bothered sometimes to help you. The location has a great view but it's not close to anything. If you decide to walk be prepared walk up and down some of the steepest hills in SFO.
