My family spent a week at the hotel and it was lovely. The rooms were not huge but they were comfortable and functional. I loved waking up to those views and the charm of this historic hotel. And the breakfast buffet was very good also. I would definitely go back.

My husband and I stayed at the Mark Hopkins for three nights while I was at a conference. The hotel bills itself as four stars, but it really isn't. It's more like two stars. The rooms are absolutely tiny, the lamps are chipped and dusty; the water pressure is poor. There was a phone number scribbled on the wall of our room, in a fairly large way--like four inches high! It was clear housekeeping tried to clean it off, but you could still read it. There are only three elevators for a hotel of this size which meant you had to wait a while for an elevator. The location SEEMS like it would be a plus because you are on the top of Nob Hill. But there is literally nothing around and you can't even get a newspaper or a cup of coffee without schlepping two blocks down very steep hills. My husband and I felt trapped by the location. There is no gift shop in the hotel so if you forget a travel item, be prepared for a fifteen minute hike down a hill to the local Walgreens and then a twenty minute hike back up. The staff, while friendly, also seems a bit unprofessional. As I was checking out, the clerk starts reading all my charges out loud, as in: "Okay, I see you had breakfast for fifty six dollars, you made a charge in the business center for twenty four dollars, etc." Not that I had anything to be embarrassed about, but it was kind of surprising! I said, "You really don't have to read every single charge out loud." On the plus side, it really is pretty spectacular to have a drink at the Top of the Mark. We also had breakfast there (which is the only option in the hotel) and the food was good. Forget trying to get into the Top of the Mark after 7 pm, though. It is jam-packed with forty-five minute waits. Another plus: the beds are comfortable! All in all, there are much better options for San Francisco hotels, and we would choose to stay somewhere that was more centrally located.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor, ask for two double beds because I think you would have more room. We had one...

This hotel needs renovating. It is in a truly wonderful area but to think you are staying in a 4 star place is misleading. Wallpaper in bathroom is peeling. My room is small like a maid's quarters- I booked on Hotwire- and yes they treat you like you booked on it.

Too many great hotels to waste your time staying here. The other Intercontinental on Howard Street is leaps and bounds better than this. This hotel should be renamed, "Grannies Bed and Breakfast."

An amazing view...ask for at least the 12th floor facing the Transamerica Building, you'll leave the drapes open all the time just to see the view. This view does come with a little price (two actually). If you want to walk, you can get to nearly anything quick...Moscone, Chinatown, wharf...whatever, and it all starts downhill. But if you're walking with bags, your penance will be the hike back up!

Oh, that second price...is the cost of breakfast. I'm happy to spend over 300 a night for a room, but c'mon, $50 for breakfast?!? It was $150 for the three of us...and for a buffet that was solid, but not worth that type of bank.

Ok, back to the hotel. Classic ambiance, wonderful service, in a beautiful setting. Enjoy the stay.

I have stayed in other hotels in San Francisco but this was by far the most luxurious, however this comes at a cost, although this time the business was paying which made it more acceptable!
The hotel is literally situated at the top of the main part of the bay area. Some of the rooms have stunning views over the city especially higher up, but of course these tend to be more expensive. The hotel is well positioned for all the major sites and the transport network; the famous cable-car stops right outside the door.
The rooms are well apportioned and the daily service was excellent.
As is the trend nowadays almost everything additional came with a charge, and as one would expect with the surroundings at a premium; Breakfast = $30, 3 drinks at the bar =$30, WIfi = $17/day etc. My advice is within a 15 minute radius of the hotel you can be sitting in one of hundreds of bars, cafes, restaurants etc all serving great food and drinks at a cheaper rate with guaranteed free WiFI access.
In summary if you can afford it, or someone else is paying, then this is a great hotel, if you are stopping on a tighter budget and/or the hotel is just a place to rest your head while visiting this great city then you are probably best being somewhere else.

Room Tip: In this city don't spend too much time in the hotel

This old building is full of class and history. Very elegant. The rooms are clean and with great views of the city. Don't expect minimalist forniture, it wouldn't match the decor!
Is hard to imagine a classier hotel... Imagine! it has a Mercedes Benz with a driver that can give you a ride wherever you want in the nearby area... we felt awesome when he took us to Morton's for dinner.
Hotel is in the top of a steep hill, you can walk to union square but the way back with your shopping bags or high heels will take you some time. The cable car stops in the corner, so is an option if you don't wanna walk or don't have the time.
Everyone is very friendly and truely care about your needs. We did not use the food services since the city is full of great places to eat.
I would stay here again on my next visit to SF. This is not the cheapest hotel, so I recommend to do a bit of research before since prices may change from one website to another.

Mark Hopkins San Francisco was excellent. Centrally located (on a hill so walking back from shopping areas nearby takes some time) with great rooms. We had a room on higher floor with great view of the city.
