“Most pleasant city hotel stay”
Reviewed February 22, 2014

We stayed at the Petite Auberge (sister property to White Swan) for the first time, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Room was clean and pleasant; even had a book case with a good selection of quality books in it (ranging from contemporary thrillers to Charles Dickens). The included breakfast was wonderful: most items prepared fresh in their own kitchen. And the afternoon snack was great too. I enjoyed the wine, and the various homemade snacks and cheese and crackers really helped our children perk up after an exciting and tiring day in the city. Friendly staff make the place feel much more like a home than any of the cookie cutter hotels ever can. Highly recommended.

My husband and I just left the Inn for our trip down the PCH. We stayed two nights in petite suite #10. This room is downstairs by itself and so cozy. After walking the hills of SF this room was perfect! The evening reception was great and the breakfast very ample. It is quite old but that's part of the charm. We would certainly return.

I've been coming to San Francisco for over 15 years for weekend getaways (I live in Los Angeles). I've stayed at many different hotels from the Fairmont to little boutique hotels like the Petite Auberge. In recent years, I've tried to find small, "romantic" european-type hotels as opposed to the large hotel chains. During our last stay in December, we stayed at the Petite Auberge. What a find! True, its not a new hotel, and yes, its hard to see the television from the bed (we stayed in the Petite Suite which is pretty large), but its absolutely charming and so cozy. If there was any down side to my room, it was the mattress - a little too firm for my liking. However, when I called to book the room for my next trip, I was told the room had a new mattress. There is a wine and cheese reception (and other little snacks) every evening. In the morning, there is a full hot breakfast, and throughout the day, they have complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate, sodas and water. The location is fantastic. I'm used to staying in the heart of Union Square and this hotel is walking distance to the cable cars, buses and Union Square. We loved it so much we booked the Petite Suite again for our trip in April.

Room Tip: I requested a Queen with fireplace, but ended up in the Petite Suite. Great value for the size - I...

P.A. is just 2 blocks from the Powell cable car line and not far from Union Square and Chinatown. We were visiting family who live in SOMA and this was within walking distance of them, too.

We stayed here 2 years ago in the fall on our 1st visit to S.F. and this time it was not as busy. The staff was very helpful when we could find them, but it often seemed that no one was working in the building. We had to go next door to the sister hotel (White Swan), especially in the evening to find a staff member for information.

The bed was too soft for our taste. We are use to a Tempurpedic that is much firmer. The breakfasts were good, but previously when we also stayed for several days, there was more variety from day to day during the course of our stay.

All in all, it is a convenient place for us to stay. There are great cookies available in the evenings by the front desk, and a complimentary newspaper each day.

This small hotel has many positives. Great location in the Nob Hill area. Friendly, very helpful staff. Complimentary happy hour with good wine and hors d'oeuvres. Yummy complimentary breakfast with lots of options. Although an old property with squeaky floors and dated carpeting, it has many nice touches, including the French music which is played in the sitting areas. We had a basic queen size room, very small but adequate. The bed was super comfortable. Valet parking. Because of location, we didn't need our car until checkout. Lots of restaurants and neighborhood markets nearby. Would definitely stay here again.

My wife and I enjoyed this hotel very much. Amazingly nice staff, quaint little hotel. Not in the middle of the action but just a couple blocks off. Only one siren at night but that's the city for you. Very nice breakfast. Thanks so much, Nice wallpaper

Very pleasant and helpful staff here, we loved our 2 day stay. The gas fireplace added warmth and romantic flavor to a delightful room furnished with antiques. My spouse said this was the best hotel we have ever stayed in. It's not for everyone. An old building means steep narrow stairways, an elevator with a gate, creaky floors and you can hear other guests if they argue. To avoid these charming old world problems, get a room at the Hilton.

The breakfast is noteworthy and no two days will be the same. Today there was an asparagus and olive quiche, sausage, potatoes, full flavored rich dark coffee, juices, fruits, presented in a charming setting on the lower garden level. An afternoon reception with wine & hors d'oeuvers was a nice way to meet other guests.

We walked to Nob Hill and Chinatown (easy), North Beach and Fisherman's Wharf (farther). Taxis are affordable and easy to snag, the Cable Car is 1.5 blocks away. Many varied restaurants are within an easy walk.

This is an ourtstanding, colorful, charming, small hotel. We would choose it again and again.

Room Tip: The "deluxe" queen rooms are slightly larger and have better views.
