We stayed at the White Swan Inn, the sister hotel next door, last year and found both to be really good. However Petite Auberge seemed to be a little more ragged around the edges. If staying in San Francisco again we’d choose the White Swan Inn, despite the cheesy wallpaper and Royal memorabilia (if you take that stuff too seriously you’ve missed the point – it’s a great place!) Breakfast and free evening wine in each hotel is identical and the same staff seem to service each hotel. The inclusive breakfast, evening wine and 24/7 coffee/tea is a lovely touch.

During our stay there were reports of theft from room(s) at the White Swan Inn and Police were in attendance at the hotel while we checked out. We’ve stayed at both hotels on different occasions and had very good experiences at each but any sniff of thefts needs to be regarded with suspicion - there were no signs of forced entry apparently. In-room safes do not appear to be provided at either hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at front can be noisier due to street

My wife and I stayed here mid-September for 4 superb nights.

Location: really good location close to the shops and near the cable car line so that you can get elsewhere easily.

Room: room was cute, not massive, but did exactly what it needed to. Loved the decor too!

Staff: tip top service!

General: breakfast was lovely each morning and afternoon cookies were a nice touch. Especially enjoyed the complimentary wine each evening where you got the opportunity to chat with guests from around the world and get some useful tips on where to go or not the next day.

Summary: we give Petit Auberge 4 out of 5 overall as it was a tiny bit noisy at times as it's a small B&B but it's a wonderful place to stay and we wouldn't hesitate to stay again. Nice work Auberge!

If you are looking for a unique and friendly experience, this is the place. This was our first time in San Francisco and what a delightful experience. The staff is so friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere is definitely French Country. It has personality and the breakfasts are delicious. The neatest part is that each evening the guests gather in the parlor and have refreshments and visit and visit! We met people from all over the world. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to San Francisco!!!

A high-tech trade show and America's Cup jammed the big name hotels. Being somewhat local, I refused to shell out $450 (even though it was my employers) for a Sheraton, so I turned to Trip Advisor. And, what a great idea as Petite Auberge popped up. It's listed as a B&B. It's really a hotel with breakfast.

Room 54 is nice, middle of top floor, reasonably quiet. The windows are modern double-pane vinyl that seal out the city noises. Extremely smart addition. Overall the hotel has an older, homey, French feel without actually being as old as it looks. Well, the floors creak, so be mindful of your neighbors.

Breakfast was delicious and will save you $15-$30, so factor that in your budgeting. The afternoon wine and Scooby snacks is tasty. Go downstairs. Fill a glass. Fill and plate. Sit down and talk with the other guests. (Do not take the snacks back to your room, unless you are not alone and ...) I enjoyed visiting with guests from France (yeah, really), Oregon, Washington, and Canada (who were visiting SF for the first time.)

Parking - yes it does take 30 minutes to retrieve your car. Get over it. It's a deal at $35. Parking at the Marriott costs $60.

Sheets - the hotel told me on checkout that they were getting all new sheets as their current vendor was slacking. The sheets I slept on were visibly threadbare. The standard competition in hotel sheets is multi-hundred-thread-count dream bed stuff, so hopefully Petite Auberge fulfilled on their promise. Small complaint.

Room Tip: King sized beds are in the rooms facing Bush Street. Queens are in the middle (more quiet).

Every year we stay at Petite Auberge to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Although there are many choices to consider, we always return to Petite Auberge. Once you walk in through the doors you feel like you are in a French country inn. It is very cozy. We always enjoy the evening wine and snacks and have met so many travelers from around the world. You will not be disappointed if you decide to spend one day or several days at Petite Auberge.
