This is a small hotel right in the middle of everything. We could walk to so many places, and hop the bus/cable car just a block away. Our room was at the end of the hall - and it was GREAT! Wonderful fireplace/shower and plenty of room to spread out for the week we were there. There was street noise, but not bad if you close the windows. Other rooms (the housekeeper showed us) were quite small and folks staying beside the elevator said that was loud. We loved the breakfasts - and the wine/cheese time was great for meeting interesting people - lots of Europeans. We had no trouble with the wifi connection and found the staff to be very helpful. We would stay there again, but would be sure to ask for the larger room. Parking is expensive - as it is anywhere in San Francisco.

Close walking distance to Union Square. At First glance the hotel which shares staff with the next door White Swan, looks a bit dated and in need of a face lift. This however hides a good suprise as The rooms are comfortable, styled as old fashioned, but it is the extras which make the difference. Breakfast was very good, plenty of choice, seved in the sitting room area in the basement. There is also a little garden area off the comfortable sitting room.
We admit to. at first being a little dissapointed and only appreciated this venue when we came in after a days sightseeing and were rewarded by a lovely evening offering of some wine and cake, served in the sitting room, while we read and chatted to other guests.(not compulsary).Another nice touch was the jar of Cookies at reception. A word of warning, the rooms do vary, some located near street can be noise, avoid the one near the lift. We were lucky and offered a choice of two. We will go back for its convience and little extras but not for a touch of luxury.

Room Tip: A word of warning, the rooms do vary, some located near street can be noise, avoid the one near the...

Short story is that we would both recommend this hotel and stay here again. There were many, many great reasons to stay here. And a few things you should know (nothing terrible)... read on!

We liked the location quite a bit. We like to walk and were less than a 15 minute walk from most of the things we wanted to see. The BART stop was about 10 minutes. The hills are significant but that's the case almost anywhere you stay in SF.

The hotel itself is super cute. A real gem. It has an old-world charm with most modern conveniences. By "most," don't expect an oversized bathtub or two sinks in the bathroom.

We had a room (51) which was oversized with a fireplace. Really a nice setup. That room is also nice because it's at the end of the hall, separated from other rooms by the stairwell, so it was also quite quiet.

The breakfast was included in our rate and was tasty. Each day had a different hot dish (quiche or breakfast casserole), pastries, breakfast meat, assorted cereals, yogurt, etc. Tasty.

Finally, you'll be well fed. A cookie/treat jar is stocked all afternoon (fresh baked) and there's an afternoon happy hour with wines and light snacks.

For full and fair disclosure, there are a few things you should know so you're not surprised:
- The front desk is only staffed a few hours each afternoon. If you need something you need to call or walk two doors down to their sister hotel. Not a big deal.
- The lobby is on the second floor and there are also rooms on 3, 4 and 5. And there's one old-fashioned elevator (the kind where you have to open a door and slide a cage door manually). We never had to wait for the elevator -- but there's only one.
- Our bathroom was clean... but could have used some updates. The tile was from the '70's. The wallpaper had minor peeling and stains in spots.
- The windows were filthy. And most could have been washed from the fire escape.
- Finally, although the breakfast is quite tasty the breakfast area is not "calming." The food is along one wall and the coffee/tea/toast is along another wall near the elevator. Everyone ends up bumping into each other trying to get their food and drink. I actually think this could be fixed by reconfiguring the setup. (Sorry... it's a disease. I have a background in Operations Management and always want to reengineer.)

Dear JHMPLS,
Thank you for staying at the Petite Auberge and for providing such a detailed review of your stay. I am happy to hear that overall you enjoyed your experience and I appreciate your suggestions regarding the breakfast area set up. I will be sure to look at it with 'fresh eyes' and see if I can improve on the flow. As you say we are able to staff the front desk only part of the day, however the Host at the White Swan Inn is always available to assist with any needs. We understand that this is not the ideal solution but it is the situation that the difficult economy has forced upon us. Hopefully in the future we'll be able to expand our desk coverage and to plan for some upgrades to the bathrooms. Thanks again for your helpful feedback.
Best regards,
Pam Wright

We stayed two nights in this hotel before flying out to Hawaii. The location is great but the hotel was a mixture of good and average. The average - Room small by American standards, there was no Wi-fi, the reception was not manned for 24 hours and when unattended you had to use the 'White Swan' next door and finally the breakfast area only had about seven or eight tables. The good - All facilities were very clean, bath robes were provided, the staff were exceedingly helpful and there was free wine, coffee and nibbles in the comfortable lounge every tea time to allow the guests to 'mingle'. If we went back we might try the White Swan!

Room Tip: Rooms away from the 'kitchen' and lift would be best

We stayed there in March 2011in a Cozy Queen room, was definitely cozy for 2 people, bed was very comfortable. Our room and bathroom was clean, hotel was quiet, we stayed in the room close to the elevator. Hotel had a musty odor, breakfast was good and a variety of breakfast items compared to other hotels. They offered boil eggs, quiche, toast, fruit, cereal, pastries, oatmeal, coffee & tea, juice. After 5 days, I found the breakfast to be repetitious, nonetheless a great start to the day. They do offer wine and cheese late afternoon, generous portions and very good. After returning from a long day, it was nice to have some home made baking available. The hotel is located 10 mins from union square down hill, up hill on the way back to the hotel, Victoria style, great ambiance.

Room Tip: If you want a bigger room, get the corner one with fireplace. For the price a cozy queen was suitabl...

So the Petite title of the hotel is definitely accurate, we booked the Cozy Queen room and it certainly is cozy! The room is tiny, and the hotel is upfront about this in the room descriptions. We stayed for two nights and found the location to be excellent, easy transportation access to get virtually anywhere in the city, and close to Union Square shops and restaurants. The hotel offers free wi-fi, breakfast and drinks/nibbles in the evening. A definate bonus for those wanting to save a few dollars. As for our room, we were unfortunately situated directly behind the reception/elevator, due to the age of the building you can hear plenty of squeaking floorboards etc. but I believe we had more than the normal amount as any guests leaving/entering would traverse past us or use the elevator as we were situated next to the elevator/reception. Saying this the hotel provided a machine in-room that provided ambient noise (think ceiling fan noise) which we found to be quite good at covering/distracting from other noises in the hotel. Not to post too many cons, but the bed was fairly uncomfortable, we found the mattress to sink in the middle and after staying at 4 hotels on this trip so far we would rate it as the worst bed we'd slept in.

Regardless of the above, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the extra amenities are great, the staff friendly and helpful, and the location was excellent.

A nice little hotel. We went for the 'cozy queen' room and yes it was on the small side but perfectly adequate for our needs, lovely decor and great shower. The breakfast and treats throughout the day set it apart from other hotels, as did the friendly and helpful staff, and we loved the excellent location near to Union Square and Chinatown. The only downside was the noise. We were in the room right next to reception and the lift, and it was very noisy. I would expect some noise from an older style hotel but found it difficult to sleep as most of the noise was later in the evening and particularly early in the morning when people were checking out. On the upside there was no street noise. I would recommend this hotel, just ask for a room on the top floor!
