“I miss that hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2013

Had a fabulous time in this amazing city and for my first time I was lucky to pick Griffon- totally based on reviews here.
Griffon is a small very classy hotel in financial district. Absolutely amazing area- stores , museums and bay bridge only few minutes away.
Staff at this hotel is great and happy - they smile all the time and it is genuine. They are very helpful and kind and you end up feeling great. Rooms were very tiny but this is San Francisco style- even smaller than New York. Elegant furniture , good bath products complimented the room.It was the kind of stay when I was happy to run out see the city and return to cosy room after. It was just perfect.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay at the Hotel Griffon. It is located in the financial area of San Francisco and is only 25 minutes from the airport. Upon arrival we were greeted enthusiastically by the valet who took care of our bags and parked our rental auto.
The staff was exceptionally courteous throughout our stay and could not have been more helpful. Congratulations to the Griffon management.
Our room was spotless and the King sized bed most comfortable. Air conditioning was right on and very quiet.
Perry's Restaurant, accessible from the lobby was terrific. We enjoyed our breakfasts and dinners there. The menu was varied and my wife, a vegetarian was offered several choices.
In all I would not hesitate to recommend the Griffon to anyone staying in SF.

We stayed in the city at the last minute. We had come down from the North Bay to attend a convention at Moscone Center. We found the "weekend deal" online which was a deluxe king room with parking and two welcome drinks from Perry's restaurant. I did call ahead of time to be sure the room was available at such late notice. When we arrived we were upgraded to the fifth floor with a room facing the bay. On such a gorgeous San Francisco night we were overjoyed by this treat. Fascinating view of the Bay Bridge and its light show. Turning your head to left you could view the Ferry Building as it lit up at night.
The staff was outstanding, making recommendations for dinner. Our meal at Epic Roasthouse was just that, epic. We used our welcome drink vouchers at breakfast at Perrys, which was also very tasty. The staff allowed us to keep our car parked at their valet garage while we took our time exploring the America's Cup Pavillion on Pier 27. We had a most excellent 24 hour experience made special by the staff at Hotel Griffon.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms facing the water are worth the treat to yourself.

We had an amazing one night stay. We ended up getting upgraded to a bay view room on the second floor.

Wow. We had an amazing view of the bay bridge light show. Only bad part about the room was that the sign for Perry's was right outside the window. Perhaps that's why they used it as an upgrade room.

Location was amazing right on the Embarcadero within walking distance of many things and close to public transit. The front desk and the other staff were very helpful and friendly. They were willing to offer suggestions about different places to go eat and helped us figure out the public transit for getting down to the Alcatraz tour the next morning. We will definitely be staying here on our next visit.

The rooms are on the smaller side especially for those who have never stayed in a major city hotel. This is not the Holiday Inn in Des Moines folks its a major urban area with high property values. Yes the sink was in a bit of an awkward position but due to the logistics of having the wet wall where it was.

Some of the other reviewers need to readjust their expectations or find a hotel outside of the city.

I stayed here for 2 nights with my Mom. We were going to the Americas Cup Pavilion for concerts right down the street. I am and will recommend this hotel to everyone that is traveling to San Francisco. We were able to walk to pier 39. About a 45 minute walk but it was such a nice day it was fine.

I can not say enough things about the staff. They were so helpful with everything. Matt, Brian, & Terrance. They were great and super friendly. John was also extremely helpful and went above and beyond for us. We ate at Perry's everyday their food was great.

I will definitely stay here again whenever I am in SF.

One night stay; quiet facing city side but a room very small; comparable to smaller European hotels. Comfortable bed and clean room. Small bathroom for water closet and small tub. Water pressure is very low for the shower and assuming this is for conservation purposes. Bathroom sink is outside of the bathroom, facing the bed; another negative. Can open the windows which is a plus. Floor and hallway slopes but then again, this is an old hotel and what some may say is "character." If you're looking for something "up to date" there are many others available for the same pricing.

I stayed at the Griffon Hotel this past weekend.

The hotel is in a great location at the Embarcadero. Its a block from the BART/MUNI station. Right across the street from the F line trolley. Its a 10 minute walk to Union Square or Fisherman's Wharf. I also feel this location is fairly safe compared to other places near downtown, although as most of San Francisco is, there is still a couple homeless people around at all times.

At check-in the hotel staff was excellent. From the bell-man to the person checking us in, it was top notch. Later on in the trip the front desk staff was very helpful in directions, eating suggestions, etc. When we inquired what to do with our baggage on the day of check-out while we eat lunch they provided us with a complimentary late checkout while we eat. I do not see that very often.

As for the room itself, we did feel it was quite small. They designed it in a way where they did manage to cram in everything in a smart way. Despite the size, it was quite comfortable. All the amenities were very nice. The TV had 5 or 6 HBO channels which was very nice. The bed was pretty comfortable. The room felt new, modern, and tasteful.

One nice touch is that they gave us complimentary turn down service. They left some taste chocolates on the bed, 2 bottles of water, and a sheet of paper telling the next day's forcasted weather, activities in the city, and other local information. For me, its those little things that leave a lasting impression. And I feel its this type of thing that separates this hotel from a larger chain hotel.

My only complaints about this hotel is the following:

Our room (211) was literally across from the elevator and near the stairs. It was very loud at times. I felt the walls were pretty thin for a hotel of this quality.

Valet parking was I think $50 a night. While I do understand that expensive valet parking is the norm for hotels in San Francisco, this seemed to be a fairly high price to park even for San Fran standards.

I will say that the hotel manager Matt did personally email me back to address those problems personally. That is the kind of service I truly appreciate.

So overall my experience with the Hotel Griffon was a very positive one. I would recommend this hotel to others staying in the area. The service was outstanding. I would stay here again. As long as you are not expecting a large room, I think this would be an excellent choice while staying in San Francisco.

Room Tip: Anything away from the elevator.
