“The Non-Luxe, Very Good Hotel”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

Very comfortable room. Excellent service. Hallways are in need of refurbishment. Elevators are kind of shaky. But what can you complain about? Deep-soaking tubs and you can park your car steps from the hotel elevator. And it costs exactly what it is worth.

We spent Xmas night at The Kabuki - great rate thru Hotels Tonight. The lowdown: excellent check in staff: informed; polite; and humorous. The Lobby: nicely elegant with Asian flourishes. The room: nicely furnished and updated with Japanese design elements (think shoji screens and wood panels). It is dated though: popcorn ceilings and some tiles in the deep soaking tub are cracked. The bed was fresh, clean and soft. Single cup coffee maker, but no creamer or sugar, huh?! Storage good; flat screen but not HD. City Garage parking: $15.00 vs. Hotel's $30.00+. Great locale: plenty of dining options: Japan Center and Fillmore St. A solid hotel if you get a good value rate.

Efficient, friendly service from the bell captain to the front desk and the room service server. Very comfortable bed and although not a large room, it was nicely equipped (definitely appreciated the robe!) Of special note was the quality and value of the meals ordered thru room service.

We hesitated staying at Hotel Kabuki because we'd wanted a more central location and because we usually stay in 4.5* hotels when in the U.S. But . . . virtually ALL the rooms in the city were already reserved by a geologists' convention and most of those remaining had tripled their prices. No way was I prepared to pay $450-550/night for hotels that could be had for $200. Hotel Kabuki was one of the few, reasonably-priced ones left so we booked it, only two days before departure. And crossed our fingers.

For the fun of it upon arrival at SFO, we took the BART from the airport into the city. Be sure to get off at Powell to grab a cab the rest of the way (there are more cabs at Powell and it's a MUCH nicer first impression of the city than Civic Centre). The cab from Powell to the hotel came to about $15, all good. You pass the Tenderloin district on the way, definitely the saddest part of town.

First impression of Hotel Kabuki was positive, and the reception was very friendly. They made an error, though, by sending us up to the wrong room (we were greeted by a Do Not Disturb sign and a rather surprised but good-natured guest). Oh well, we trundled back down the elevator to the lobby with our luggage and the error was corrected (we were supposed to be assigned a room exactly one floor below). Reception guy sheepishly apologized, we just rolled with it.

I was pleased and relieved upon entering the room. It was a decent size and immediately felt comfortable, and the bed was great. I can't deny that the room was worn in places, and there were details that could have been slightly better cared for (I'm a clean freak), but you could tell a lot of design/decor love had been put into it originally. High marks for the bathroom, which neatly separates the WC, the sink, and the bath/shower areas Very handy for a couple! Also, the shower had good water pressure, so high marks for that :-) Nice shower amenities. Bathroom was very clean.

THE VICINITY: There's a cute coffee/tea shop across the street, and Japantown is worth a :90 minute stroll. Large indoor mall packed with sushi & noodle bars and Hello Kitty shops. Coming from Richmond, BC, we're no strangers to a Japanese mall, but this was still fun to wander through. We visited the Konko Temple a block away and had a lovely talk with the minister, who warmly answered our questions about this fairly new religion (150 years). We also enjoyed a good Thai meal in Japantown, just a couple of blocks away. Friends had driven in to meet us for dinner and had no problem parking, which itself is an event in SF.

To get to Union Square on our first morning, we took the bus that's just a few steps from the Hotel (turn right, cross the street). That bus ride turned out to be memorable b/c of the kindest bus driver on the planet (someone who really loves her job and looks out for her passengers, esp those with disabilities). It was about a :15 packed ride to Union Square, and after that first day we either cabbed it or walked everywhere. One night, we saw the Book of Mormon at the Orpheum Theatre and walked home afterward . . . about a :35 minute walk. We love to walk and there was only about 1/2 a block through the Tenderloin that felt a bit uncomfortable.

We stated at Hotel Kabuki for three nights and felt very comfortable. Granted, it's not in the middle of everything - just Japantown! - but we probably would have skipped Japantown entirely had we not stayed there, so we were glad we did. It was our first experience at a JdV hotel, I will certainly be open to trying another.

Room Tip: King corner room was quiet and had a good view.

I've stayed at Hotel Kabuki for 3 weeks during my trip to SF in January 2011, and I had an excellent impression about it. The rooms are awesome, I had a good service (breakfast, receptionist, maid, a coded safe, internet, TV, A/C), and the place is very clean and beautiful!

The Kabuki provided a large sauna room for our adult family of 4 and 2 Scottish terriers when we gathered in SF to celebrate our 30th anniversary. We dropped an email to the manager before our arrival and upon arrival we received a warm personal welcome - along with a bottle of wine - recognizing our gathering and the event. We took advantage of the location in Japantown with massages, sushi, easy parking and nearby Filmore in PacHeights. Our kids have friends who live in the City and the room was open and large enough to be the spot to meet and chill out. Note that parking is not easy in SF so having an in-out parking structure for multiple parties with cars is essential and the Kabuki has it. We are planning another post-Christmas shopping visit again with the kids and pups and can't wait to get back. Hopefully this time will make it to the spa as well.

Room Tip: We loved the sauna and soaking tub room with sliding screens on the first floor.

Hotel Kabuki is a pricey boutique hotel in the middle of everything, San Francisco. As I've has other very pleasant experiences with the Joie de Vivre chain, I was pleased to be booked there by my company. This turned to disappointment immediately upon arrival.

The bell men are rude. Neither opened the cab door or the hotel door. I said, "Good evening," and made eye contact with both. One looked away, the other grunted. Neither offered to assist me with my bags. Mind you, I was the only person entering or leaving at the time. This made for an extremely poor first impression.

All else was as expected, courtesy-wise. The room was a bit small, but that's San Francisco. Overall lighting was too dim for my liking. The bathtub & shower were amazing. The bed and linens were top notch.

This hotel has work to do with some staff before I would stay there again. A room is a room. It's the service provided by people that make a difference. Hotel Kabuki is not worth the price.
