“Had a really terrific time”
Reviewed November 5, 2013

I was on the second leg of a cross country west coast trip. The week before I was in LA - so clearly when I got to the hotel on Monday I was already tired. I spent that weekend at another Joei De Vivre hotel in Sf called the Hotel Vitale - which is certainly upscale - and I was sure what was in store for me at the Kabuki. Well all I can say is that I was thoroughly delighted and really enjoyed my stay. The people at the front desk were gracious and helpful. I had laundry that needed to be done and they directed me to a place across the street - that did a slew of clothes for a very reasonable amount - they even dropped off the clothes to the service desk. As someone mentioned earlier the fitness center was a bit small - but the room was clean and quite and comfortable, The wireless worked really well. I would certainly come back and stay there again and plan to do so in a couple of weeks. You can't go wrong.

Room Tip: I'm told that the rooms higher up and in the corner are better and they said that I should ask w...

We stayed here for one night in October. The room was very comfortable. I loved the soaking tub. We stayed on the 12th floor with a good view of the city. 42 mph winds added to the excitement of the evening. We will stay here again when we need a hotel in the city.

I stayed during a conference at the moscone center, and enjoyed my stay. It was very convenient to take the limited (express) bus right at the hotel (38L) down to market street and then a 2 blocks walk to moscone center. The bus runs every 5 minutes.

As others have stated, the hotel features very nice bathrooms, and my room (conner room) was very spacious. Compared to other hotels in San Francisco this was a great deal at 195$ per night. Very friendly staff. On the downside: windows were dirty, the fitness center is very small and not well equipped, some parts look a bit worn.

I also enjoyed that it is in Japantown, many japanese and asian restaurants around the hotel.

Room Tip: Try to get on the upper floors (9+), to get away from street noise.

We're so pleased to have been able to host your San Francisco stay, and we thank you for taking the time to lend us your feedback. As noted in your review, our property lends an unparalleled convenience when it comes to navigating our city, and our hospitality is simply second to none. That said, we do appreciate your concerns regarding housekeeping and maintenance, and we will surely pass these along to the team in an effort to tighten any shortcomings and to promote an improved return experience. We'd love to share more of our site and services with you soon, and we encourage you to reach out the next time you visit our area. Many thanks again for your time and review!

I stayed in this hotel during the Bart strike in July, and overall it was very pleasant. Our room was at 5th floor, which required the room key to access, and it felt pretty safe. The bed was very comfortable. I also liked the hot tub in the room.

The down size of this place: It is a bit far from SF downtown. Also there was a humming noise outside my window, which I suspected it was the AC. The breakfast was pretty plain. There were many choices, but didn't appear to be very healthy.

Lastly, since we booked the hotel sort of in the last minute, the rate for weekend was very high, around $469? while the normal rate is about half of it.

Stayed here during a conference. Rooms were clean, staff was friendly, conference area was nice. Bath area was great, tube and shower side by side. Was a little pricey but found rates day of that were half the cost of booking 3 weeks out via HotelTonight. If your planning to eat breakfast get it early as they do not have room service after 11AM and the Restaurant/Bar does not open until 5PM.

Hotel Kabuki is located in the Japan Town/Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco adjacent to the Japan Center shopping mall. There is an on-site restaurant and bar (both closed Sunday and Monday) and many other dining options in Japan Center and surrounding blocks. The hotel is pet-friendly and also offers a spa and Japanese-style communal baths, a fitness center, and meeting rooms. Valet parking is available at $40 per day, and there is also self-parking in the public garage underneath the hotel at $23 per day. We chose this hotel because it is near Cal Pacific Med Center and offers a discounted rate to people with business at the center. CPMC in turn provides frequent, free shuttle service to and from the hotel, a great convenience that saves time and avoids the scramble for parking at the busy medical center.

On the plus side, Hotel Kabuki's lobby and other public areas are very attractively appointed, including a small Zen garden and koi pond just off the lobby. Every staff member we encountered--from the front desk to the valet to housekeeping--was very friendly, helpful, and courteous. The rooms are larger than often the case in San Francisco in this price range, and have a pleasing Japanese decor including shoji screens at the sliding glass door rather than drapes. The bathroom is roomy and counter space is adequate. There is a deep soaking tub as well as a walk-in shower. Also included is a coffee maker and a mini-bar with the usual assortment of over-priced drinks and snacks. Beds are comfortable and they give you lots of pillows. After the outside traffic noise dies down at night, it was very quiet.

Negatives include some maintenance issues, such as peeling paint in several spots, sections of bathroom tile that need re-grouting, and a toilet paper holder that was loose in the wall. There is a safety grab bar in the tub, but not in the shower. A threshold of a couple of inches separates the bathroom proper and the toilet closet, and there is a similar threshold at the sliding door leading to the small balcony. It's very easy to stub your toe or trip over these if you don't watch where you're walking, particularly at night in dim light.

All things considered, Hotel Kabuki offers a good value in the pricey San Francisco market. I give it 3 and 1/2 stars. With a little more attention to maintenance, it would be a solid 4 stars.
