Though we have been to San Francisco many times this is our first visit to Japantown. Hotel Kabuki has a delightful Japanese contemporary decor with a beautiful serene garden and waterfall. It is in the heart of Japantown within walking distance of many fine restaurants to suit any budget. There is an active but not noisy nightlife. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. The bathroom was very open and large. The room was clean and comfortable but a bit small for a family. We would definitely choose Hotel Kabuki again but if traveling with a family would request a larger room. Kay O.

Room Tip: For families request a large room. The standard double room is a bit small for a family.

Employees are very nice at the hotel. Takes long to get your fifty dollars back that they hold off your credit card when you check in. Other than that the hotel is great!!
Nigh time in the restaurant was poor service. Morning was great service.

This is a decent hotel located in the middle of the Japan Town.
The only problem with this hotel is the location which requires you to cab it everywhere. However cab rides are almost $10 each way from this hotel to every location in SF.
Rooms are very clean. Bathrooms are clean but old. Our room was very spacious as well.
Overall decent hotel but next time I would stay closer to Union Square.

Our experience at the hotel was somewhat mixed, but because I got a good rate from the hotel during a sale, or I might be less satisfied.

The heater did not work in our first room. When we called the desk, the person said it was broken but that they were working on it. When we called a few hours later, the next person seemed to think that this was an ongoing problem with that particular room and offered us more blankets. However, it was only 5 p.m., and at $250/night for the weekend days, we thought this was a tasteless suggestion and asked to be moved instead. We probably should have been offered another room immediately so they could address the heater rather than having someone tell us they were working on it when they actually weren't.

They got us the new room immediately, and the heater worked, but the A/C didn't. We didn't need it since it was cool outside, but it would be better if all amenities worked. Other than that the second room was great--firm bed, nice pillows, expected amenities, etc. The room was spacious and quiet except for some noise we could hear through the bathroom vents. The location was good in that we were away from the heavy (sometimes noisy) tourist areas but still close enough to catch a bus anywhere. Safeway is nearby, too, if you want to get your own breakfast items or drinks, though there's no fridge in the room.

I would not have known about the free passes to the Japanese spa had I not see that online, so be sure to ask for passes. I thought it would be mentioned as part of our check in, but it was not. Door people were great and held luggage when we arrived hours before check in, and the desk called when a room became available.

Minor pet peeve--I've now gotten 5 email reminders to write a review. I guess that the barrage has finally worked, but the begging seems in poor taste.

Room Tip: I think paying a bit more for the corner rooms is probably worth it. We enjoyed the extra space and...

The pictures on trip advisor really do justice to how cute this hotel is. It's in japantown next to a lot of restaurants. The staff was friendly and the rooms were really cute! The bathroom was spacious considering it's in SF and the location was great because it was a 1 - 2 miles from Hayes Valley and Haight/Ashbury. The other great thing about this hotel is that there is a lot attached that you can park at. I thought the rates were very reasonable. I think I paid $19 (arrived at 8pm, departed at $12pm)

My only complaints about this hotel was that the room was a little stuffy. I don't even know if there was a AC but I'm sure if we would have called the front-desk they would have helped. The other thing is that I could hear conversations in other rooms and I think they were coming from the vents. It didn't really bother me until the next morning when the next door guests were being super loud and obnoxious. I stayed out late and just wanted to sleep in but unfortunately that didn't happen thanks to the vents/thin walls. I called the front desk, they were very apologetic and sent someone up to quiet the neighbors down.

I'd likely stay here again because it's prime location for the spots I like to hit up while I'm in SF.

My husband and I stayed at the Kabuki on July 31 for the third or fourth time this year with our two dogs. This time we had Room 1005, a spacious corner room. I was very happy to see that the suggestion I made in my last review resulted in a new Keurig (one cup espresso maker) coffee machine in this room (perhaps in all rooms?) and the coffee was far superior to our last visit in April. The folks at the front desk were very welcoming and sent us upstairs with a half bottle of wine and dog treats. The wine might be an amenity for being a member of the hotel's frequent guest club called the Joy of Life Club. The receptionist called the room after check in to make sure that everything was as we expected.
The rooms are slighted faded, but overall, a great value. There are Shojii screens covering the windows instead of drapes and other tasteful Asian inspired decor. There is a desk with several plugs for electronics, a small refrigerator, a TV and an upholstered lounge. The sheets are very smooth and nice. The bathroom has a tub with shower in a room with a separate faucet low to the floor with a wooden bench alongside similar to a hotel in Japan. I happen to love the scent of the soaps that are provided.
One interesting note: my husband likes the room to be very cool and was unable to turn on the AC. When he called the desk, they said that the hotel uses either heat or AC, depending on the weather, and that night, only heat, but not AC was available. I have never heard of this before. We just cracked the sliding door to the small terrace and the room cooled right off.
This is a nice hotel in a great location for restaurants and shopping in Japan town and Fillmore Street. There are several wonderful sushi bars in the Japan town mall just through the hotel's side door. It's also a short cab ride (or a 20 minute walk) to downtown SF, the financial district and other popular tourist spots.

Room Tip: The corner rooms are bigger and have bedside tables with reading lamps on both sides. The north or...

Got a decent-sized room on a higher floor offering 'city views', which was pretty good and dramatic on days when the fog rolled in, more so when the sun had yet to set. Location was great for Japanese and Korean dining, some excellent ramen and sushi diners nearby. Easy to get into downtown, either walking or catching a direct bus right down to Embarcadero. Only big downside was business center charging for printing and slow internet speeds, not much improved even after paying for an 'upgrade' - ironic in what's supposed to be silicon valley homeground!

Room Tip: higher floor rooms with 'city view' are worthwhile if you get a good price, as SF has great...
