“Lovely surprise in San Francisco”
Reviewed November 20, 2012

After heart issues on a cruise ship, I was sent to CalPac Medical Center for observation and tests. My husband needed a place to stay within close proximity to the hospital and this place was perfect. The hospital had a shuttle that took him door-to-door which worked out very well.

Our AAA travel agent booked us into what turned out ot be a lovely, classy hotel in Japantown...sight unseen. Well-appointed, squeaky clean, quiet, spacious and perfect for our stay after my release. We had the most comfortable king-size pillow top mattress you could imagine. The concierge, bellmen and doormen were so polite and helpful. They totally took the stress out of what could have been a bad situation. They were concerned with my well-being and how I was feeling mafter my hospital stay. Made it feel more like a cozy Inn than a larger, metropolitan hotel in a large city.

We decided that we would again return to San Francisco under better circumstances and we would definitely stay at the Hotel Kabuki.

Room Tip: Get a corner room on a high floor so you can see the city a bit.

We are not the classic San Francisco tourists; we live some 50 min drive away, and know the city pretty well. We also drove to the hotel (i.e. had a car to get around).

Pros:
We took a suite with a sauna, very nice and special
Décor unique and special but, don't worry, “American size” not “Japanese size”
Location is pretty good, especially if you are with a car, not crowded as downtown area (i.e. Union square/Market Street) and easy to find parking, also an easy drive in and out to different parts of the city, the hotel BTW is around a mile plus straight , same street, from Union square
Japan town- isn't a big attraction (China Town style) but has lots of nice Sushi restaurants and some nice Japanese style stores.

Cons:
If you are a tourist coming to town for two-three days (and especially if it’s your first time around, and you do not have a car), I think you are better of around down town or the Embarcadero area where you can walk, or get a taxi/cable ride, to most of the known classic attractions

Dear ChuckLu,

Thank you for a great review! We sincerely apologize if we were not able to exceed your expectations of the Hotel Kabuki or Japan Town. It is truly part of the charm of San Francisco! We hope that you'll join us again so we may show you the world-class service our team prides themselves on. I think you'll find them outstanding, and it may make up for some of the short comings you encountered previously. We truly wish to see you again soon!

Aside from the centralized location of the Hotel Kabuki, the quality of the rooms and customer service make this hotel always a pleasant stay for me. The access to great food and entertainment is ideal for this 7x7 city. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for quality lodging in San Francisco.

Stayed here for 3 nights on a business trip. Very clean rooms. Free wifi. Great location with several restaurants within walking distance. Several bus lines that go by this hotel within a few blocks. I did not have a car. But parking can be expensive like any other downtown hotel.

We stayed in one of the East/West suites which was a big hit with our daughters as they got to sleep on tatami mats in their own separate Japanese-style room while Mom and I enjoyed our comfy king bed. Beautifully decorated and spacious, the only drawback was the seriously dated bathroom that was in much need of some attention. They could probably get up to speed on the television set as well. A great location, connected to Japan Center and easy access to the rest of the city. I would definitely stay there again.

We loved our room with a view (and balcony) as well as the very friendly, very helpful service...at the front desk and in the restaurant. We had a wonderful Japanese breakfast one morning and a delicious buffet American breakfast on another. We also enjoyed a delightful Happy Hour dinner of wine and very tasty appetizers one evening. The location was the best! We were able to walk everywhere! We enjoyed the shops and restaurants in Japantown, the fun Fillmore district (filled with a variety of restaurants), and the downtown area as well. We will definitely return to the Hotel Kabuki and have already recommended it to many of our friends.

The hotel is located in the middle of Japan town. It has a small outdoor car park but it's connected to an indoor city parking lot, which is much cheaper. It's also connected to the Japan town mall, where there are restaurants, supermarkets and a spa. All the staff there were very friendly and polite. The room was cozy but nicely decorated with a Japanese touch. The only non-5 star rating I gave is sleep quality, because of the thin walls and door, we could hear noisy drunk neighbors walking, talking, singing in the corridor in the middle of the night.
