Sometimes only a few words are needed to summarise a place and this is one of those times. Good value, great location, safe with little extras that speak volumes. The fireplace, the free mimi-bar, a big desk, free wine and food in the evenings, cable tv and large rooms. Plus the staff are always so polite and helpful. There are tiny little things like wear and tear that any hotel goes through, and its not exactly perfect but then again where is. This is a fine hotel and you won't go wrong. Don't hesitate just book it.

If you are British it is an odd experience to stay here as it's a sort of Disney version of Olde England - wall displays that tell me that all English people drink tea every afternoon, models of cathedrals made out of matchsticks, cabinets full of teapots, biscuit tins, cricket bats, that sort of thing. But the hotel is decent, the rooms are large, the breakfast is excellent and the complimentary wine and nibbles hits the spot after a long day striding the streets of San Franscisco. The staff are helpful and the location is good for shops, dining, etc. - though if you luggage, it's a bit of a walk from Powell St BART.

Room Tip: Higher is better

We stayed here for 4 days and had a wonderful stay. A proper boutique hotel with large rooms and great service. Located close to Union Square and in walking distance to two different tram lines. You can't go wrong by booking at this hotel.

I prefer the quaint and quiet of small Inns and B&Bs and I have stayed in 100s of them. I have to rank my stay at White Swan in the top 5 along with Copper Beach Inn in Mystic, CT and Edwin K B&B in Florence, OR. Let's start with Cora at check in. She should be a training manager on customer service. We had two rooms 53 & 55 and they were large in comparison to other accommodations in the heart of San Francisco. The beds were comfy and I slept better than I usually do when I travel. Wine & cheese hour is my favorite because it's the best time to meet and talk with other guests. White Swan provides a conducive environment to relax and talk. We kept our "do not disturb" sign on our door, but the housekeeper left us a bag of towels for our second day. Thoughtful. Ella at check out was pleasant and helpful. Thank you everyone at White Swan!!

My wife and I celebrated our 26th anniversary at this B & B, and we were very happy that we chose this accomodation instead of the new hotels. It was quaint, charming, spacious room, very close to cable cars, restaurants, Union Square. We will definitely recommend and come back again. We also want to thank the staff for acknowledging our anniversary with a nice card and gift, that is so greatly appreciated. We wish the best for the White Swan Inn.

Room Tip: We had room on the 5th floor # 57, very nice. Buy a Muni pass for 1 ($ 14) or 3 days ($ 22), you can...

We chose this hotel on the basis of its description and good reviews on several travel sites. It certainly lived up to its reputation. While it is a little run down and frayed about the edges in places, this really only added to the experience. Our room was large, the bed comfortable and there was little or no external noise even though we slept with the windows open. The free breakfast was great even if the menus were a little quirky at times. The afternoon wine and canape hour (or two) were a great opportunity for meeting other guests and swapping experiences. The only sour note was the appearance of some "meeting" attendees one afternoon who did rather take over the available space and spoil the atmosphere. But that was just one afternoon in an otherwise extremely pleasant week's stay at this gem. I will definitely return when I am next in SFO.

This charming little "English Inn" seems a little bizarre in the setting of cosmopolitan San Francisco, but the service was excellent, the price was decent, and the location was very good (quite central). Our room was v. spacious with a comfy bed, a gas fireplace, a little kitchenette with bar sink and fridge, and a nicely renovated bathroom. The over-the-top chintzy, English garden decor is, again, a bit quirky, but also cozy. There are also a lot of nice freebies like wine from 5 to 6:30 (we weren't able to make it, but appreciated the offer), cookies in the lobby, breakfast, and complimentary drinks in the fridge.

Room Tip: If street noises bother you, you might want to request a room on the back side of the building.
